bolzan's revived jack bed pairs italian artisanry with eco-friendly materials
The Jack bed collection by Bolzan, originally designed by Zanellato/Bortotto in 2017, has been reinterpreted with a focus on sustainability and timeless design. This revival aims to create a durable and aesthetically pleasing object while adhering to eco-friendly principles. Bolzan, an Italian benefit company based in Venice, has a history of combining traditional craftsmanship with industrial precision, continuously researching materials and local 'know-how' to produce high-quality designs for the international market.
The reinterpretation of the Jack bed prioritizes eco-friendly materials. The bed's structure, initially made of painted metal, has been upgraded to certified ash wood sourced from reforestation efforts. This shift reflects a commitment to sustainable forestry and material selection. For the wood finishing, Loris Giacomin of LorisTill employed an ancient technique involving natural paints derived from grinded soil and stones, dissolved in boiling water. This method ensures a completely natural application, performed by hand using spray, brush, or rag, further emphasizing artisan craftsmanship and environmental responsibility.
The upholstery of the revived Jack bed also incorporates eco-sustainable materials. Designers Giorgia Zanellato and Daniele Bortotto collaborated with Torri Lana to develop a refined fabric that enhances the bed's pattern, reminiscent of the willow intertwining seen in the Sacile landscape, a region significant to Bolzan's roots. This unique fabric is crafted from eco-sustainable yarns, including hemp for the plot, chosen for its low water consumption and ability to reclaim heavy metal-contaminated land. The warp consists of American cotton with a slub effect, woven on a double beam jacquard loom for enhanced durability. The combination of these materials results in a three-dimensional, vibrant, and deep texture.
For the bed's padding, pre-consumer cotton is utilized. This material, typically discarded due to its short yarn length, is repurposed, showcasing Bolzan's commitment to minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency. In instances where leather is used, Bolzan collaborates with Presot tannery, which sources all its leathers from European farms adhering to animal welfare standards and certified as GMO-free. The tanning process itself is chemical-free, involving a long manufacturing process where hides are immersed in a solution of water and tannins, stiffening the leather naturally. This meticulous selection of materials and processes underscores Bolzan's dedication to both artisan excellence and environmental stewardship.
The Jack collection's design maintains its original simple and minimal aesthetic. The structure comprises two sides into which the headboard and footboard tubes are inserted. These tubes act like rollers, securing the fabric or leather upholstery. The customization options for the tubes allow for various widths, accommodating French, king-size, or custom-made bed dimensions. Beyond the bed itself, the collection is complemented by a matching bench and coffee table, designed to create a cohesive and harmonious bedroom environment. This comprehensive approach ensures that the revived Jack bed not only meets high standards of design and comfort but also aligns with contemporary ecological and ethical considerations, solidifying Bolzan's position as a leader in sustainable luxury furniture. The renewed Jack bed represents a significant step in Bolzan’s journey as a benefit company, integrating ethical production with aesthetic appeal and functional longevity.
