Winter Deep-Clean: 5 Things Pros Never Forget in December

While many homeowners associate deep cleaning with spring, professional cleaners emphasize the importance of certain cleaning tasks during the winter months. This comprehensive winter deep-clean checklist, endorsed by experts, highlights five critical areas that should not be neglected until spring. Neglecting these tasks can lead to a buildup of dirt, allergens, and potential damage to the home's interior, impacting both aesthetics and inhabitant health. One crucial area is entryway flooring. During winter, increased foot traffic brings in moisture, dirt, and de-icing agents like salt from outside. If left unaddressed, these substances, particularly salt, can permanently damage carpet fibers. Experts recommend regular cleaning of floors, particularly carpets, using a cleaning solution with a pH between eight and ten, combined with the hot water extraction method. For tougher stains or larger areas, professional-grade carpet cleaners or rental units like a Rug Doctor are suggested. Baseboards are another key area for winter deep cleaning. Heating systems and reduced airflow in winter contribute to the accumulation of greasy dirt on baseboards and door frames. This grime attracts more dirt and becomes increasingly difficult to remove over time. Cleaning professionals advise using an effective cleaning paste, like The Pink Stuff, applied with a damp microfiber cloth, to remove oily residues without damaging painted surfaces. Mold prevention and treatment are also essential winter tasks, especially in bathrooms where humidity levels tend to rise when windows are closed. Weekly bathroom cleaning is generally recommended, but a specific focus on mold during winter is critical. Homeowners should inspect grout lines, shower curtain liners, and toilet seals for any signs of mold growth. For existing mold, a paste made from oxygen bleach powder can be used to scrub grout. Additionally, replacing old or mold-affected shower liners is a cost-effective preventative measure against more extensive mold remediation later. Maintaining heat vents is important for both indoor air quality and heating efficiency. When addressing baseboards, it's a good time to inspect and clean the home's vents and radiators. This involves wiping down radiators and either replacing or washing air filters. These actions contribute to improved air quality by reducing dust and allergens, and they also enhance the efficiency of heating systems, potentially lowering energy costs during colder months. Finally, deep cleaning soft furnishings is vital. Fabric surfaces in homes accumulate dust, pet dander, and odors more rapidly in winter due to closed windows and higher indoor moisture. Delaying the cleaning of upholstery and other soft furnishings until spring can lead to a heavy, musty indoor environment. Regular cleaning of these items, even without a vacuum, is beneficial, though using specialized upholstery attachments on a vacuum can make the task significantly easier, ensuring a cleaner and healthier living space throughout the winter. #WinterCleaning #DeepClean #HomeMaintenance #CleaningTips #MoldPrevention #IndoorAirQuality #UpholsteryCleaning #EntrywayCare #BaseboardCleaning #WinterCleaning #DeepClean #HomeMaintenance #CleaningTips #MoldPrevention #IndoorAirQuality #UpholsteryCleaning #EntrywayCare #BaseboardCleaning
