Frontoffice, an architectural firm, has developed the 'm house' in Tokyo, Japan, a three-story structure that innovatively integrates a dance studio, a residential living area, and a yoga space. This project aims to rekindle the experimental and creative architectural spirit prevalent in Tokyo during the 1960s, a period marked by significant urban expansion and architectural innovation. The design for the 'm house' adopts a primitive, almost cartoonish aesthetic, reflecting the unique and mysterious dolls designed and sold by the clients, who have a global following. This approach aligns with Frontoffice's goal of maximizing space and volume within Tokyo's typically constrained urban sites, adhering to local building regulations to create a highly functional and compact structure. The building's layout is characterized by its simplicity: three distinct single rooms stacked vertically. The ground floor accommodates the dance studio, which is strategically positioned to engage with its urban surroundings. A reflective aluminum screen buffers the studio from the street, while continuous windows and mirrors on this level create an open atmosphere, allowing dancers to feel connected to the city rather than isolated. This floor is partially submerged within the sloping site, adding to its unique integration with the terrain. Access to the residential space on the second floor is provided by steel stairs featuring an exaggerated landing that functions as a porch. Additionally, an interior staircase, concealed behind a mirrored door, offers an alternative route to this level. The original layout, comprising three divided rooms across two stories, was reconfigured to create a single, expansive area. A significant alteration involved the entrance, which was initially thick and small. The team re-imagined this entry point as a transparent, open wall framed in white metal, allowing clear visibility from both interior and exterior perspectives and referencing the primary color scheme of the new office. This design choice aims to create an inviting and accessible entryway. The working station within the new hub was designed to seamlessly connect with an integrated coffee shop area. This fluid connection is achieved through an open and airy design, featuring a long communal table and a distinctive modular shelving system. Both the table and the shelving units are designed with adaptability in mind, allowing users to customize them according to their needs. The modular components of the shelving system are arranged in a specific, yet seemingly random, design ratio, contributing to the dynamic aesthetic of the space. The great room within the Tahoe Pines project showcases an impressive design featuring vaulted, wood-clad ceilings and steel-frame windows on three sides, creating a significant and visually striking space. The initial architectural design of the room included a wood ceiling with steel I-beams and large window systems, which provided a foundation for a modern aesthetic. Despite the grandeur of the high ceilings, the design objective was to infuse a sense of coziness and invitation into the space, encouraging occupants to linger. To achieve a more inviting atmosphere, subtle modifications were made to the room's elements. The previously contemporary limestone fireplace, characterized by straight lines, was softened with the addition of gentle curves. This alteration aimed to make the focal point of the room feel less stark and more harmonious with a relaxed interior. A challenge arose with the scale of the space, particularly concerning the window seats flanking the fireplace. Standard sconces appeared disproportionately small in the expansive environment. To address this, the built-in benches for the window seats were designed to be slightly higher than typical, which helped to balance the oversized nature of the room's architecture and window systems. The furniture selection process focused on combining classic foundational pieces with items that introduce visual interest. A classic main sofa was chosen to provide a timeless base, while side pieces were incorporated to add character. Notably, a plaid sofa was introduced to bring a pattern into the room, reflecting a deliberate choice to be bolder in a vacation home setting. The plaid pattern was selected for its classic appeal, ensuring it would remain stylish over time. The design team also ensured the room's paint scheme complemented the overall aesthetic, using Westhighland White by Sherwin Williams throughout the majority of the home, including the great room. EWE studio, based in Mexico City, has collaborated with ESRAWE studio to transform a 600 sqm former 1950s dance hall in Mexico City's Roma Norte neighborhood into a co-existing creative space. The renovation involved stripping away existing materials to reveal and celebrate the building's original industrial structure, particularly its wooden trusses which were previously hidden above a low plafond. This approach resulted in an open and naturally lit environment, fostering a warm and inspiring atmosphere for both design studios. The renovated space is divided to accommodate both studios, with EWE studio occupying a 40 sqm showroom at the front. This showroom serves as a display for EWE's past collections, showcasing their design philosophy, material studies, and developmental processes. Since its inception in February 2018 at the Zona Maco Art Fair, EWE studio has dedicated itself to preserving and advancing Mexico's rich artisanal heritage. They achieve this by integrating traditional craftsmanship with new mediums and contemporary design languages to create limited-edition collectible design pieces. The showroom's shelving units are designed to reflect EWE studio's diverse material library, incorporating various elements such as glass, marbles, stones, woods, ceramics, and metals, alongside other organic materials.
