Dolores Heights Residence / jones | haydu
The Dolores Heights Residence, located in San Francisco's Dolores Heights neighborhood, is a collaborative architectural and interior design project by jones | haydu and Sawyers Design. Completed in 2021, this 295 square meter house is situated on a west-sloping site, offering extensive views of the city and the iconic Sutro Tower. The design focuses on maximizing these panoramic views while integrating the residence into its urban hillside context.
The project involved a meticulous selection of materials and finishes to create a contemporary yet comfortable living space. Key manufacturers contributing to the residence include Western Window Systems, providing high-quality windows that frame the cityscape; Blu Bathworks for bathroom fixtures; Benjamin Moore for paint; Graff for plumbing fixtures; Integrated Resources Group for various architectural elements; Mosa for tiling; Sogni Di Cristalo for specialized lighting or decor; Tulip for furniture or design elements; and Umili for additional furnishings or finishes. These selections collectively contribute to the sophisticated aesthetic and functional performance of the home.
Architectural details include a thoughtfully designed exterior featuring a combination of facade treatments and strategically placed windows to optimize natural light and views. The interior design, spearheaded by Sawyers Design, emphasizes an open-plan layout that connects various living spaces, including the living room, dining room, and kitchen. Stairs are an integral part of the design, both functionally connecting the multiple levels of the residence and serving as sculptural elements within the interior. Beams are visible in some areas, contributing to the architectural character and structural integrity.
The residence includes a variety of spaces such as a living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom, and multiple bathrooms. The dining area is furnished with a table and chairs, positioned to take advantage of the natural light and views. The kitchen features modern countertops and sinks, blending functionality with sleek design. Bathrooms are equipped with contemporary sinks and countertops, with windows often incorporated to allow for natural ventilation and light, while maintaining privacy.
Outdoor spaces, such as patios and decks, are designed to extend the living area and provide opportunities for residents to enjoy the San Francisco climate and views. The exterior photography highlights the facade, windows, stairs, and handrails, showcasing the careful detailing and material choices. Interior photographs capture the interplay of light and space, the furniture arrangements, and the overall ambiance of different rooms. The project's documentation also includes site plans, floor plans for the basement, first, second, and third floors, as well as sections and elevations, providing a comprehensive overview of the design and construction. The Dolores Heights Residence represents a modern architectural solution tailored to its specific urban site, emphasizing views, natural light, and a refined material palette.
