Why the Perfect Time to Work with an Interior Designer Is Now

The decision to engage an interior designer often lacks a definitive starting point, yet the article emphasizes that the ideal time to bring a professional designer on board is always sooner rather than later. This is illustrated through three case studies handled by designers from Decorating Den Interiors, a network of independently owned and operated design firms across the U.S. The first scenario involves a complete reimagining of an entire space. Krista Shugars of KD Designs Custom Interiors transformed a historic 1880s home in Baltimore. Her project began not with aesthetic details like paint colors or fabric swatches, but with a significant structural overhaul. This involved knocking down two brick walls and relocating an entire kitchen. KD Designs functioned as a project manager, overseeing the renovation and assessing the feasibility and cost of the complex undertaking. A key challenge was integrating a contemporary feel while preserving the home's historic features, including 10 solid marble columns. Shugars and her team not only reconfigured the layout by demolishing walls and moving an unused kitchen, bathroom, pantry, and laundry area, but also reframed windows and added a skylight to enhance natural light. A built-in beverage bar was introduced to modernize and add versatility to the space, with the aesthetic details of paint and fabrics addressed later in the process. The second case highlights how designers can transform an underutilized room. Kimberly Paulus, owner of Monarch Designs in Sienna, Texas, often encounters clients who express not knowing what to do with a particular room. For one family with two daughters, a high schooler and a college student, Paulus initiated the design process by conducting a comprehensive interview to understand their lifestyle, hobbies, and activities not supported by their current living spaces. The family's shared interest in coffee and hanging out led to the conversion of an unused formal dining room into a European-inspired coffee bar and internet café. This involved replacing the traditional dining setup with a coffee station and bistro tables, and incorporating design elements such as stonework, ceiling beams, and hand-painted tiles to evoke the ambiance of a European coffee shop. Paulus underscores that a designer's role extends beyond superficial preferences for colors or styles, delving into personal habits and desires to ensure the space truly reflects the client's identity. The third scenario addresses adapting a space to changing life circumstances. A couple with a vacation home in Naples, Florida, decided to make it their permanent residence due to the pandemic, rendering their existing casual home office in a detached cabana inadequate. Claudia Leah of Claudia Leah Design identified several functional deficiencies in the original setup, including poor acoustics causing echoes, an unsuitable backdrop for video calls, and a general lack of functionality. Leah proposed a custom-built office solution within an enclosed dining area, meticulously considering the couple's specific work needs. This involved installing acoustically backed walls for soundproofing, adding adjustable-louver shutters to existing French doors for light control and privacy, and designing the overall layout to provide an aesthetically pleasing background for video conferences. The new office quickly became the most frequently used room in their home. Leah concludes by explaining that a designer’s expertise lies in identifying overarching themes in a client’s preferences for furniture, colors, room arrangement, and lighting, and then guiding them through a process of exploration to achieve a functional and aesthetically cohesive outcome. #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #SpacePlanning #DesignConsultation #LifestyleChanges #HomeOffice #ResidentialDesign #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #SpacePlanning #DesignConsultation #LifestyleChanges #HomeOffice #ResidentialDesign
