Sky House Is a Bali-Inspired Penthouse in a Former Miami Hospital
The Sky House is a Bali-inspired penthouse located in Miami, within what was formerly a hospital building that has been adaptively reused to become The Ritz Carlton Miami Beach Residences. Designed by Catalina Echavarria of CEU Studio, this penthouse spans nearly 9,000 square feet, with a significant 6,000 square feet dedicated to outdoor living spaces, offering 360-degree views of the ocean and the Miami skyline. The design ethos behind Sky House focuses on creating a luxurious tropical modern environment that also imparts a sense of relaxation and healing, a concept specifically requested by the owner in the wake of the pandemic.
The outdoor areas are a central feature of the Sky House, designed for dining, lounging, and entertaining. A notable aspect of these spaces is the collection of Balinese-inspired furnishings, all of which are handcrafted by designer Catalina Echavarria and her team of Indonesian artisans. These pieces, made from natural wood, are intended as heirloom items, emphasizing durability and timeless appeal. White cushions are strategically used to introduce comfort and provide a visual contrast against the natural wood. For example, a custom Latitude Dining Table is priced at $34,000, and individual Nero Dining Chairs are valued at $1,600 each, highlighting the bespoke and high-end nature of the outdoor decor.
The interior of the Sky House mirrors the tranquil and luxurious atmosphere established outdoors. It features white sofas, wooden furniture, and various natural elements, contributing to an oasis-like feel throughout the residence. The modern kitchen adheres to a neutral color palette, incorporating simple beige cabinet doors and darker stone for the countertops and backsplash, maintaining a cohesive aesthetic with the rest of the penthouse. This minimalist approach in the kitchen design further emphasizes the overall serene and sophisticated character of the home.
In the main bedroom, an open bathroom concept is integrated, and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors extend the living space directly onto the outdoor terrace, enhancing the connection between indoor and outdoor environments. The bedroom features a woven bed frame, complemented by MENU’s Hashira Pendant Lights. These pendant lights are strategically placed to flank the bed, serving as functional lighting without occupying valuable space on bedside tables. Other areas within the penthouse, including additional bathrooms and living spaces, continue the theme of natural tones, modern minimalist design, and an emphasis on comfort and luxury, all contributing to the Bali-inspired aesthetic.
Overall, the Sky House project represents a comprehensive transformation, merging the historical context of a former hospital with contemporary luxury living. The design successfully incorporates elements of Bali's serene aesthetic into a Miami penthouse, creating a private retreat that offers both panoramic views and a healing environment through its thoughtful selection of materials, handcrafted furnishings, and a harmonious balance between indoor and outdoor spaces.
