YouTuber custom-builds coffee table with functional star system around an exploding sun
A Swedish modder, operating under the YouTube channel The 5439 Workshop, has engineered and constructed a unique coffee table that integrates a mechanical orrery, complete with tilting orbits and an "exploding star" mechanism. This intricate piece of furniture combines aesthetic appeal with mechanical complexity, offering a dynamic representation of a star system. The modder, relatively new to robotics with a modest online following, considers this project his most mechanically challenging to date.
The coffee table is meticulously crafted primarily from cherry wood, chosen for its warm texture and light-reflective qualities. Its design features a two-layered tabletop, ingeniously constructed from two cherry wood planks combined with three white boards. A precise, large cutout in the center of the tabletop accommodates the mechanical star system, which is visible through a protective glass cover. The table is supported by four robust pillars that connect to a stable base frame.
Following the assembly of the wooden components, the surfaces were carefully sanded and smoothed to eliminate any imperfections, particularly around the central cutout. The glass cover was then securely fitted over the opening, preparing the way for the installation of the celestial mechanics beneath. The mechanical orrery is a complex assembly of gears, bearings, and motors, all designed to animate a miniature star system. At its core is a fist-sized sun, fabricated using a selective laser sintering (SLS) printer with nylon powder. This sun is designed to split open in a manner reminiscent of flower petals, simulating an "exploding" effect.
The planets within this system revolve around the central exploding sun, mimicking natural elliptical and tilting orbits to accurately reflect celestial movement. The entire star system is constructed from anodized aluminum parts, allowing the rings that guide the planets to tilt at varied angles. This sophisticated mechanism enables the planets to move both horizontally and vertically within a single plane, driven by a nearly silent motor integrated into the table's frame.
Demonstrations of the coffee table have been met with positive feedback from the online community. Viewers have expressed appreciation for the craftsmanship and ingenuity, with some offering suggestions for further enhancements, such as walling off the sides of the central mechanism or adding a black background to visually enhance the mechanical components. This innovative project stands as a testament to the modder's skill in blending intricate mechanical engineering with functional furniture design.
