JSN design assembles diamond-shaped tiles into chair
Danish furniture designer Jonas Søndergaard Nielsen has developed a unique seating solution called the 'tile chair,' which was showcased at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2014. This innovative chair is constructed from an assembly of diamond-shaped pieces, designed to offer both flexibility and optimal comfort. The primary concept behind the 'tile chair' is its ability to adapt to the user's body movements, providing a personalized seating experience.
The research phase for the 'tile chair' focused on identifying a shape that could inherently provide the necessary flexibility and structural strength. The diamond-shaped tiles were chosen for their inherent geometric properties that allow for articulated movement when combined. The chair features upholstery from Kvadrat on its front side, ensuring a comfortable contact surface for the user. The underside of the chair, which forms the decorative back, is crafted from walnut veneer, adding an aesthetic contrast and natural element to the design.
Key to the chair's innovative flexibility is the method of assembly. The diamond-shaped tiles are interconnected using a piece of fabric strategically placed between the upholstery and the decorative walnut veneer tiles on the backside. This fabric acts as a flexible hinge system, allowing each tile to move independently yet cohesively with its neighbors. This mechanism mimics the functionality of traditional hinges, but on a more granular and distributed scale, enabling the entire structure to flex and conform.
When a person sits in the 'tile chair,' the individual tiles gently adjust to the contours of their back. This responsive design ensures that the chair naturally follows the body's movements, providing continuous support and comfort. The dynamic nature of the chair distinguishes it from conventional rigid seating options, offering an ergonomic solution that adapts to various postures.
Jonas Søndergaard Nielsen's design is a testament to how material innovation and clever assembly can lead to furniture that is not only visually appealing but also highly functional and user-centric. The 'tile chair' exemplifies a design approach that prioritizes adaptability and ergonomic comfort through a modular, flexible construction.
