Carving a Niche
Jesse Damrow, a 35-year-old designer, is opening Joint Effort Studio in Walker’s Point, specializing in mid-century modern furniture. Damrow’s background in woodworking began in his father Michael’s stair-making business in Twin Lakes, where he learned about different wood types and carving techniques. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s architecture school, he moved to the Caribbean to work for an architectural firm focusing on large commercial projects. The 2008 Great Recession, however, led him back to his father's workshop and into furniture design.
Under the brand Joint Effort Studio, Damrow crafts sleek, mid-century modern furniture pieces, including couches, desks, and chairs. His designs are characterized by their minimalist hardware and the absence of brackets or metal supports, relying on time-consuming wood joinery techniques. This approach results in exceptionally clean and elegant lines. He primarily uses local Wisconsin woods such as black walnut and ash, which are both abundant and cost-effective. Damrow's passion for furniture making persisted even after he took a position as an architectural consultant in Chicago.
His distinctive furniture has garnered attention, notably from Adam Barone, managing director of Sonic Union, a New York City sound mixing firm. Barone sought furniture that could complement his company’s futuristic office design while offering a playful, retro aesthetic. Damrow’s work, particularly a couch with sloping edges and leather cushions, perfectly matched this vision. He also designed a unique piece for Sonic Union: a reverse lazy Susan consisting of three chairs attached to a single base that rotate around an anchored table. Barone noted how senior ad agency creatives enjoyed spinning on this piece while engaging in conversations.
Damrow’s new retail and studio space in Walker’s Point will allow Milwaukee residents to experience his designs firsthand. Among the pieces to be showcased is a notable "Lifetime Crib" designed for his twin children. This innovative crib system can be reconfigured from conjoined toddler beds into two single twin beds, and later, into a queen-sized guest bed. This adaptable design reflects Damrow’s functional and forward-thinking approach to furniture. His journey from an architectural background to establishing a furniture design studio highlights his dedication to craftsmanship and his unique blend of traditional woodworking skills with modern design principles. His work embodies a seamless integration of aesthetic appeal and practicality, rooted in his early exposure to woodworking and his architectural training.
