Nest Plays Catch Up With New Temperature Sensors and More | Wirecutter
Nest is introducing remote temperature sensors, allowing its thermostats to adjust temperatures based on specific rooms rather than just the thermostat's location. These sensors, priced at $40 for one or $100 for a three-pack, are scheduled to ship next month and are compatible with the third-generation Nest and Nest E thermostats. This development aims to bridge a gap between Nest’s offerings and competitors like the Ecobee4, which already includes a remote sensor and is our current upgrade pick for smart thermostats. While the Ecobee4 is approximately $40 more than a Nest E with one additional sensor, Nest still does not offer HomeKit support, a feature present in Ecobee products.
The Nest Thermostat is highly effective in homes with central air systems, where heating and cooling are evenly distributed. However, its performance diminishes in environments with electric zone heating, as it can only sense the temperature at its mounted location. This limitation means that areas where occupants spend most of their time might not be adequately regulated. The introduction of these new remote sensors is expected to address this issue, enabling Nest's smart learning system to better manage heat distribution across different spaces. The author hopes this innovation will reduce the need for supplementary heating devices, such as a space heater at a desk.
Grant Clauser, Wirecutter’s smart-home editor, notes that the actual effectiveness and integration capabilities of these remote sensors remain to be fully understood until they are released and thoroughly tested. Wirecutter plans to conduct comprehensive testing and report on the performance of these new sensors soon. In addition to the temperature sensors, Nest has also launched other smart home products. These include the Nest Hello smart doorbell, which positions the Google-owned company as a direct competitor to Amazon’s Ring, and the Nest x Yale smart lock, a number-pad entry system. Both the smart doorbell and smart lock are currently available, and Wirecutter intends to evaluate their performance against existing market options in the near future.
