Matter Thermostat from Meross for EU Heating Systems
Meross, a Chinese manufacturer, has introduced a Matter-enabled wall thermostat specifically designed for the European market. This new product, the Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat MTS215B EU, targets water-based heating systems, expanding Meross's existing lineup which includes a US version for electric baseboard heating (MTS215 US) and an EU model for electric underfloor heating (MTS215 EU). The MTS215B EU is engineered to replace current wall controllers and is compatible with gas boilers or hydronic floor heating systems that operate on a 230-volt supply. The thermostat integrates into Matter platforms such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings by leveraging the home’s 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network through Matter over Wi-Fi connectivity; the 5 GHz band is not supported.
Installation of the MTS215B EU requires a flush-mounted wall box equipped with a neutral wire. Meross provides an online compatibility checker to help users determine if their existing heating system is suitable for the new thermostat. Due to the involvement of 230-volt mains power during installation, individuals without prior experience are strongly advised to seek assistance from a qualified electrician. Improper installation poses safety risks and could potentially damage the heating system.
The thermostat is available in both black and white finishes and features a glass front with touch-sensitive controls. Its backlight is adjustable, allowing for different brightness levels in standby and active modes. A notable feature is the built-in sensor that detects significant temperature drops, typically indicative of open windows during ventilation. Upon detection, the thermostat automatically pauses heating for a duration of 15 minutes, contributing to energy efficiency. An additional wired external sensor is included, which can be positioned on the floor to provide more accurate temperature measurements and enhance heating regulation. Through the dedicated Meross app, users can create customized daily heating schedules, defining specific temperature levels for different times of the day. This advanced scheduling capability is currently not uniformly supported across all Matter ecosystems, with exceptions like Homey Pro and Home Assistant offering similar functionalities.
