The next generation Nest thermostat
The article announces the release of the second-generation Nest Learning Thermostat, highlighting significant improvements in both hardware and software. Building on the success of its predecessor, the new Nest thermostat features a refined design, enhanced compatibility, and updated software version 3.0, which will also be rolled out to existing first-generation Nest owners.
In terms of design, the second-generation Nest is 20% thinner than the original model. It is encased in a premium solid stainless steel ring that is designed to reflect the surrounding wall colors, allowing it to blend more seamlessly into various home aesthetics. The sensor grille previously located at the bottom of the original Nest's display has been replaced with a smooth lens, contributing to a more streamlined appearance. The installation process has also been simplified with upgraded press connectors for wiring and repositioned screw holes, while retaining the built-in level for easy setup.
A major focus of this update is increased compatibility. The new Nest Learning Thermostat is now compatible with 95% of low-voltage heating and cooling systems, addressing a common concern from potential users. This expanded compatibility includes support for two-stage cooling, three-stage heating, dual-fuel systems, emergency heat, and whole-home humidifiers and dehumidifiers. A unique five-star connector allows Nest to integrate with various wiring configurations, making it suitable for almost all heating and cooling systems in the US and Canada. For more complex installations, Nest Pro installers have been specifically trained to handle these advanced systems.
The 3.0 software update introduces several new features designed to enhance user experience and energy efficiency. Key among these is System Match technology, which customizes Nest's algorithms and features based on the specific type of heating and cooling system in a home. This ensures more tailored controls and improved system performance. System Match automatically activates features like True Radiant for radiant heating systems, optimizing comfort and energy use by learning how long it takes to heat a space and pre-heating accordingly. Heat Pump Balance is introduced for heat pump systems with auxiliary heat, allowing users to prioritize either comfort or savings by automatically adjusting when auxiliary heat engages. Early-On technology, integrated with both True Radiant and Heat Pump Balance, ensures the desired temperature is reached precisely at the scheduled time.
Further software enhancements include more intelligent Auto-Away, which detects occupancy more accurately and can activate as quickly as 30 minutes after departure. Auto-Schedule functionality has been extended to the Heat • Cool mode, enabling Nest to learn preferred temperatures when switching between heating and cooling. The update also brings support for Spanish and French languages across the thermostat, web app, and mobile app, alongside Celsius temperature options. Android tablet compatibility, including support for devices like Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, has been a highly requested feature and is now available. The Nest mobile and web apps have also received improvements, featuring more detailed Energy History, an upgraded At a Glance screen, remote locking capabilities, and language switching options. The second-generation Nest Learning Thermostat is available for pre-order and will be widely available through various retailers in mid-October.
