Chef Ludo Lefebvre's Modern Kitchen With Rustic Roots
Chef Ludo Lefebvre, a prominent figure in the Los Angeles culinary scene, and his wife Krissy undertook a significant remodel of their kitchen in Sherman Oaks, California. The objective was to blend Ludo's European sensibilities with a contemporary design, creating a space that is both functional for professional-level cooking and inviting for family life and entertaining. Collaborating with designer Ginny Capo, the couple achieved a harmonious fusion of rustic elements and modern aesthetics within their home.
The renovation prioritized making the kitchen the central and largest area of the house, reflecting the family's belief that it is where everyone naturally congregates. To achieve an open and airy feel, several walls from the original kitchen were removed. The design features a neutral color palette, incorporating whitewashed stone veneer on wooden cabinets, which pairs effectively with white Caesarstone countertops and an earthy limestone backsplash. Metallic accents, such as a copper trough sink and copper bar stools by Bend Goods, introduce a warm contrast, complemented by the sleek stainless steel appliances from Fisher & Paykel. These specific elements, such as the copper sink, were a personal desire of Chef Lefebvre, and the bar stools were serendipitously found to integrate the desired rustic touch.
The functionality of the kitchen was paramount for Chef Lefebvre. A notable design choice was the integration of a sunken ceiling fan, which efficiently removes smoke without obstructing views, unlike traditional stove hoods. Above the pull-out pantry doors, open shelves were installed to keep Lefebvre's extensive collection of cookbooks readily accessible. The appliances were selected for both their modern appearance and high performance. The Fisher & Paykel Integrated French Door Refrigerator was seamlessly fitted into the cabinetry, and its ActiveSmart Foodcare technology helps maintain food freshness. A CoolDrawer offers versatile temperature settings, functioning as a freezer, chill space, pantry, or wine cooler, providing additional flexibility for the family's needs.
Despite the designer's suggestion to install ovens higher, Lefebvre opted for a lower placement directly below the cooktops, prioritizing safety and intuitive workflow to avoid carrying hot pans across the kitchen. The DishDrawer, situated under the sink, offers two pull-out drawers with extra height for larger dishes. Chef Lefebvre particularly favors the 5 Zone Induction Cooktop, praising its rapid heat-up times and seamless integration into the kitchen island. He highlighted the safety benefits of induction cooking, especially when his young son is involved in meal preparation. A pull-out storage area beneath the island further enhances safety by securely storing pots and pans.
The overall design allows Lefebvre to interact with guests while cooking, as the cooktop and ovens face the bar seating at the kitchen island. This open-concept layout promotes fluid movement between different zones and living areas. The family emphasizes the kitchen's role as a gathering place, where they share meals and create memories. Lefebvre expressed satisfaction with the Fisher & Paykel products, commending their sleek design and superior functionality, which were critical factors in achieving a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly practical.
