Flooded Basement Transformed Into High-End Home Cinema By Rayleigh Sound & Vision
Rayleigh Sound & Vision received the Artcoustic Installation of the Month award for November 2018, recognizing their work on a high-end dedicated home cinema room. The project, initially intended as a simple upgrade from an outdated media room in the client's basement, faced a significant setback when the basement flooded shortly after the client moved in. This catastrophic event resulted in the complete loss and unsalvageability of the existing setup, necessitating a full strip-out of the basement down to the brickwork and a complete redesign of the space.
Despite the unforeseen challenge, the incident spurred creativity at Rayleigh Sound & Vision's Chelmsford team, leading to the design of a dedicated 10-seat cinema room. The team collaborated closely with Artcoustic to create 3D renders, providing the client with a detailed preview of the completed installation. This collaborative approach also ensured that the design optimized both aesthetic appeal and technical performance, ultimately achieving what Rayleigh described as a 'reference status' installation, prioritising the highest quality audio and picture.
For the audio system, Artcoustic’s flagship Performance Sub 6 was integrated, powered by an Arcam AVR-850 receiver paired with a matching four-channel power amplifier. This configuration supports a 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos audio experience, delivering immersive sound. The visual component of the cinema relies on a Sony VPL-760 4K HDR laser projector, projecting onto a 150-inch wide DT-Screens cinemascope screen, ensuring a high-definition and expansive viewing experience.
Beyond the technological integration, Rayleigh also took responsibility for supplying the cinema seating. The seating arrangement featured a mix of Cineca’s Siena range, upholstered in leather for the rear row, and the Modena range, finished in Alcantara fabric with coordinating footrests, for the front row. Both seating ranges are fully electric, with the front-row seats offering dual motors for independent head and foot recline, enhancing comfort and customisation for viewers.
To complement the core audio-visual setup and seating, several advanced control and atmospheric elements were incorporated. RGB LED lighting from Rako Controls was installed, alongside Starcase Infinity Fibre LED lighting panels to create a dynamic and immersive ambiance. Lutron motorised curtains provided light control and added a touch of luxury, while a Control4 automation system was implemented to seamlessly manage all components, providing an integrated and user-friendly experience. The comprehensive equipment list included specific models such as three Artcoustic Spitfire SL 16-8 speakers, four Artcoustic Diablo SL speakers, four Artcoustic Architect SL 2-1 speakers, an Oppo UDP-203 4K Blu-ray player, a Control4 EA-5 processor, a Control4 T3 7-inch touch screen, eight Starscape bespoke Infinity star ceiling panels, three Rako RGBW modules, one Lutron motorized curtain track, and one Coolmaster Net Air-con interface, all contributing to the sophisticated and high-performing home cinema environment.
