An Art Nouveau apartment in Catania converted to hospitality
This article details the transformation of an early 20th-century Art Nouveau apartment in Catania, Italy, into a bed and breakfast. The project, undertaken by Marasco and Santangelo along with Galati Casmiro Giorno, focuses on reinterpreting the Stile Liberty language by blending historical elements with contemporary design. The core of the renovation involved restoring the original colored cement tile floors, which subsequently informed the color palette for new interior additions. These floors, a hallmark of the period, are not only preserved but also highlighted as central decorative features within each room.
The spatial reorganization of the apartment was a key aspect, ensuring that each room now functions independently, equipped with its own private bathroom. The bathrooms are subtly separated from the sleeping areas by lightweight, colorful partitions. A deliberate design choice was made to keep these partitions lower than the original ceilings, allowing the distinctive vaulted ceilings to remain visible and untouched, thus respecting the apartment’s historical architecture. The entrance area has been reimagined with a striking red volume, which serves as a central hub for the reception and kitchen. This central space facilitates access to the various autonomous rooms, enhancing the functionality of the new hospitality concept.
The project emphasizes a dialogue between the past and present, achieved through thoughtful additions and a cohesive color scheme derived directly from the existing architectural details. The minimalist design interventions for lighting, seating, and small furnishings complement the historical context without overshadowing it. This approach allows the Art Nouveau heritage to shine through while integrating modern amenities necessary for a contemporary hospitality experience. The renovation successfully bridges the gap between historical preservation and modern functionality, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere for guests. The completed project in 2024 showcases a sensitive yet innovative approach to repurposing a historically significant building.
