The art of making a room soundproof: woman turns pictures and canvases into sound-absorbing decor
Lotte Raun, an industrial designer and founder of Mute, has developed an innovative solution to combat excessive echo and ambient noise in homes and offices. Inspired by her Scandinavian background, where acoustic design is often integrated into architecture, Raun devised a method to transform everyday decor into sound-absorbing elements. Her journey began when she and her family moved into a villa in Dubai, where she experienced the common issue of pervasive echo due to minimal interior design and hard surfaces. This 'invisible problem' led her to create functional art that enhances both the aesthetics and acoustics of a space.
Mute's flagship product, 'acoustic pictures,' features custom images, including photographs of her children, printed on acoustic-transparent canvases. These canvases allow sound waves to pass through to an inner acoustic core, which converts them into micro-vibrations, effectively dampening sound. Raun worked with local suppliers in Dubai to produce these items, ensuring that the frames are made in Jebel Ali and the acoustic canvas prints come from a local source. The flexibility to use personal photos or select from a curated catalog also supports local artists and photographers by providing new avenues for their work.
The timing of Mute's launch proved opportune, coinciding with the rise of remote work during the pandemic. Many individuals faced challenges with poor audio quality during virtual meetings due to echoing environments. Mute's solutions addressed this need by improving speech intelligibility and overall sound clarity in home offices. Raun observed that clients often reported issues based on feedback from others on video calls rather than their own direct experience, highlighting the widespread nature of the problem.
Beyond acoustic pictures, Mute has expanded its product line to include 'Mute Felt' panels, which are sound-absorbing felt panels made from recycled plastic bottles, designed for walls and ceilings. These panels offer a lighter and more cost-effective solution for larger surface areas. Mute is also developing products like 'Mute Curtain' and 'Mute Seals' to mitigate external noise, such as traffic or construction, coming through windows and doors, particularly relevant for residents in the UAE.
For larger projects, Mute employs a comprehensive approach that starts with an acoustic assessment using specialized equipment to measure reverberation time. After the installation of Mute Pictures and Mute Felt, a follow-up measurement is conducted to quantify the acoustic improvements, making the 'invisible problem' of sound visible and verifiable for clients. Raun's business has seen significant growth, necessitating the recruitment of additional employees to meet the increasing demand for effective and aesthetically pleasing acoustic solutions for both residential and commercial spaces.
