Industrial style meant hard work for Hong Kong flat owner

Jonathan Barkey, a lawyer from Michigan, embarked on a meticulous journey to transform two oddly shaped units in a commercial building in Sheung Wan, Hong Kong, into a 1,060 sq ft loft-like apartment with an industrial aesthetic. Barkey collaborated with Rowena Gonzales of Liquid Interiors to realize his vision of a space that, despite the common misconception of industrial design as cold and unwelcoming, would be chic and full of character. He aimed for a 'concrete-ish' look, which he discovered was surprisingly challenging to achieve. The design process involved extensive experimentation and a persistent commitment to detail, requiring his contractors to work with a diverse range of materials rather than solely concrete. The material selection was crucial to successfully implementing the desired industrial feel. For instance, cement board was strategically utilized in the bedroom, providing a distinct texture and visual appeal. In the living areas, plaster was employed to create a smooth yet robust finish that complemented the overall industrial theme. A notable choice for the kitchen cabinet and dishwasher fronts was imi-beton, a composite material made from minerals and marble, which mimics the appearance of concrete. This innovative use of materials allowed Barkey to achieve the desired industrial aesthetic while ensuring the space remained functional and aesthetically pleasing. The project underscored that perfecting the industrial look demands more than just stripping down a space; it requires a thoughtful integration of various textures and finishes to create a balanced environment. Barkey's flat, described as an open-plan, one-bedroom unit, masterfully blends contrasting elements. It combines hard and soft textures, and minimalist and lavish details, resulting in a sophisticated bachelor pad. This fusion of styles helps to dispel the notion that industrial design is inherently stark, instead demonstrating how it can be adapted to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The integration of modern design principles with industrial elements produced a living space that is both stylish and functional, reflecting Barkey's personal taste while maintaining a high level of design integrity. The project highlights the complexity involved in achieving a seemingly simple industrial design. It necessitated a deep understanding of materials, an eye for detail, and a willingness to iterate and refine until the desired outcome was met. The collaboration with Liquid Interiors was instrumental in navigating these challenges, ensuring that Barkey's vision was translated into a tangible, high-quality living space. The end result is a testament to the fact that a well-executed industrial interior is far from hastily effected; it is a product of careful planning, creative material selection, and unwavering dedication to design excellence, making the flat a unique and personalized home in the bustling city of Hong Kong. #IndustrialInteriorDesign #HongKongApartment #SheungWan #LoftDesign #MaterialSelection #InteriorRenovation #UrbanLiving #DesignChallenge #IndustrialInteriorDesign #HongKongApartment #SheungWan #LoftDesign #MaterialSelection #InteriorRenovation #UrbanLiving #DesignChallenge
