Hidden timber beams and steel joints, discovered during renovation behind a dropped ceiling, were intentionally exposed and integrated into the design, serving as visual anchors and contributing to the space’s authentic industrial feel. Initially, the loft presented challenges typical of converted spaces, including disjointed utilities and an inefficient kitchen layout. Batliboi addressed these issues by centralizing the utility infrastructure and strategically raising the floor in certain areas. This thoughtful alteration enabled a seamless integration of the kitchen into the heart of the home, optimizing both functionality and flow within the space. The renovation showcases an innovative approach to spatial planning, turning initial limitations into design opportunities. A prominent feature in the main living area, particularly the dining room, is a 15-foot sculptural shelf. This piece, characterized by its green, wave-like ripples, is constructed from layers of CNC-milled wood and precisely color-matched to the client’s existing pendant lights. It functions as both a practical sideboard and an artistic focal point, demonstrating the designer’s ability to merge utility with aesthetic appeal. This bespoke element adds a unique and dynamic visual texture to the loft, embodying its playful aesthetic. In the kitchen, the design combines sleek stainless steel countertops with brass accents and natural stone, creating a sophisticated yet warm ambiance. Rather than fully custom cabinetry, Batliboi utilized a flat-pack system from REFORM, carefully customizing it to achieve a high-end, built-in appearance. The project, known as “The Green Machine,” addresses the challenge of living in a compact, 312-square-foot studio flat in East London. The client, a young professional, required a versatile space that could accommodate various activities, including sleeping, eating, working, entertaining, and lounging, especially given the increased need for working from home during the pandemic. The design strategy focused on an adaptable millwork intervention within a 97-square-foot zone, creating the illusion of multiple “rooms within a room” despite the flat's small footprint. The total budget for this intervention was £25,000. SUPRBLK Studio led the architectural design, with ESquared as the builder and Nicholas Worley as the photographer. The project demonstrates that sustainable design can be achieved at any scale and within a limited budget. This was accomplished by repurposing and refinishing existing elements with color and paint, rather than opting for removal and replacement. Thoughtful material selection for the millwork was also a key aspect of the sustainable approach. The primary material chosen was Valchromat, an FCS-certified nontoxic MDF wood. Valchromat was selected for its durability, robustness, bold aesthetic, ease of manipulation, and eco-friendly properties. Valchromat is manufactured from recycled pine wood and mill waste, making it an environmentally responsible choice. It is also moisture-resistant and flame-retardant. The vibrant colors of the millwork are achieved using organic dyes, and, unlike many man-made boards, Valchromat is recyclable at the end of its lifespan. This material choice aligns with the project's commitment to both beautiful design and environmental responsibility. The Green Machine exemplifies how careful programming, considered materiality, and joyful detailing can transform architecture into a functional “machine” for contemporary living. Through close collaboration with local tradespeople, the design incorporated flexible and adaptable zones that cater to immediate needs while also anticipating future desires. This sense of interiority is balanced by visual connections to the surrounding laneway context through framed openings, both existing and newly created. A key design element is the prominent use of black metal panels and beams, which define the spaces and create a striking aesthetic throughout the interior and exterior. Blackened steel panels form the ground-level entry, setting the tone for the industrial yet refined design. A blackened steel stair rises to the mezzanine, acting as a focal point and connecting the different levels. Voids are strategically incorporated, allowing light to penetrate deep into the structure and creating visual connections between floors. The main living area features voids that open to the mezzanine above, contributing to an open yet defined spatial experience. The upper mezzanine level studio is nested within full-height void spaces that remain uninhabitable, maintaining a connection to the lower levels while offering a distinct vantage point. Corner glazing at both ends of the floor and a roof deck extend the mezzanine outwards, providing views of the city and integrating the interior with the urban landscape. The renovation successfully blends existing and new materials, creating a dynamic interplay of textures and forms.
