Review: The InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hôtel

The InterContinental Bordeaux Le Grand Hôtel is a historic property situated in the heart of Bordeaux, France. Originally constructed in the 1770s, the building was designed by the same architect responsible for the Grand Théâtre. It transitioned into a hotel in 1902 and underwent extensive renovation and expansion in 2007 under the guidance of hotel designer Jacques Garcia, who is known for his extravagant and flamboyant interiors. In late 2015, InterContinental took over the hotel, with Garcia again contributing to the decor. The hotel features 130 rooms and suites, two restaurants, two bars (including a rooftop bar), and a luxurious spa. During a recent trip to France, the reviewer utilized an IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card's annual free night benefit to book a stay. While standard room rates were approximately $440 to $517, the free night provided significant value. The IHG Rewards Club Select Credit Card offers a sign-up bonus of 80,000 IHG Rewards points after spending $1,000 within the first three months, with the $49 annual fee waived for the first year. The free night redemption value for this hotel stay was equivalent to 45,000 IHG Rewards points, representing a redemption value of 0.98 cents per point, which is above TPG's current valuation. For incidentals, the Chase Sapphire Reserve Card was used to earn 3x Ultimate Rewards points, offering flexibility to transfer points to various travel partners. Upon arrival, the reviewer and a family member were promptly assisted by the doorman. Check-in was efficient, and thanks to the reviewer's IHG Platinum status (obtained through the IHG credit card), they received an upgrade to a Deluxe room, adding an estimated $77 in value. The hotel's layout, encompassing several 18th-century buildings, features labyrinthine hallways and varying room configurations, some with internal stairs. The Deluxe room, though advertised at 377 square feet, felt smaller but was tastefully decorated in Garcia's mid-19th-century Empire aesthetic with deep tones, rich upholstery, and red-and-white wallpaper depicting pastoral scenes. Despite a request for two beds, the room felt tight but was compensated by a large window overlooking a quiet courtyard. Amenities included a portable luggage rack, mini-fridge, coffee maker, and Bordeaux wines. The bathroom was lavish, featuring marble surfaces, a dark-hued wood vanity, and striking black marble accents. Agraria products were provided, and the toilet was in a separate room. A notable drawback of the bathroom was the high bath lip, which could pose a challenge for some. The hotel offers diverse dining and drinking options. Le Pressoir d’Argent, a Michelin two-star restaurant overseen by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, offers a tasting menu for 175 euros and à la carte options like French lobster for 120 euros, with an extensive wine list. A more casual brasserie, Le Bordeaux Gordon Ramsay, serves Continental cuisine with two-course lunch menus starting at 29 euros. The main bar, located in a two-story atrium, offers an all-day menu. During summer, the rooftop bar, Night Beach, provides city views and a vibrant atmosphere, open for lunch and then as a bar and club in the evenings. The Night Beach also features a Jacuzzi for guests, though reservations are not accepted, leading to potential wait times. A significant amenity is the Spa NUXE Les Bains de Léa, designed to evoke a Roman villa with sculptures, frescoes, and mosaics. It includes men's and women's locker rooms, a hammam, sauna, and a two-story indoor pool with a replica of Ingres' _La Source_. A lounge area offers tea and snacks, and a small gym is available. Spa treatments range from 55 to 510 euros. A major frustration during the stay was the unreliable Wi-Fi connectivity. Despite this, the overall impression of the hotel was highly positive, particularly praising the friendly and efficient service from all staff members. The hotel's historic charm, elegant decor, varied dining options, and stunning spa contributed to a fantastic experience, making it a highly recommended destination despite minor issues. #HotelReview #LuxuryTravel #Bordeaux #InterContinental #IHGRewards #HotelDesign #FineDining #SpaExperience #HotelReview #LuxuryTravel #Bordeaux #InterContinental #IHGRewards #HotelDesign #FineDining #SpaExperience
