Red, Red, Red: Christian Louboutin’s First Hotel Is A Maximalist Reverie In Scarlet
Christian Louboutin, the renowned French shoe designer, has ventured into the hospitality industry with his first hotel, Vermelho, located in the unassuming Alentejan town of Melides, just south of Lisbon, Portugal. The hotel's name, meaning "red" in Portuguese, is a direct homage to Louboutin's iconic red soles and his profound fascination with the color. Vermelho is conceived as a celebration of heritage craftsmanship, intricate design, and maximalist aesthetics, all infused with an unrestrained sense of joy and beauty.
The hotel's exterior maintains the characteristic feel of Melides' small-town architecture, discreetly concealing the vibrant design within. Upon entering, guests are immediately immersed in a world of kaleidoscopic color and detailed design. The entrance features a 100-year-old Moroccan wooden portcullis, sourced by Louboutin during his travels. The flooring is an elaborate sea of geometric tiling, with over 15,000 tiles produced by Fábrica de Azulejos de Azeitão, a traditional tile producer. Notably, the glossy, carmine red tiles in the hotel bar feature a unique pigmentation developed in collaboration with Louboutin himself. Italian ceramicist Giuseppe Ducrot, known for his religious iconography, contributed the intricately molded window and door surrounds, balcony railings, and frescoes.
The interior design continues to showcase an eclectic mix of influences and carefully curated objects d'art. The bar area, for instance, features gilded arches inspired by Seville’s Holy Week floats, crafted by the same liturgical goldsmith’s workshop. Silver tassels and red velvet stools evoke a romantic, sun-hazed ambiance, complemented by vintage Bollywood posters and a 400-year-old cabinet from the Spanish Revolution. Art installations are ubiquitous, including a glass-like coral sculpture in the Indian Lounge, ceramic bird's heads by Elisabeth Lincot, and a ceiling lamp by Nicolas Cesbron adorned with sea urchin shells. Several suites feature intricate mosaics made from hundreds of individual butterfly wings.
Despite the abundance of detail and global artifacts, Vermelho maintains a sense of refined elegance rather than overwhelming maximalism. Each of the 13 rooms possesses a distinct character. Examples include the Matinha Suite with murals by Konstantin Kakanias, featuring sunset-pink walls, daisy patterns, and geometric wooden parquet floors. Other rooms incorporate unique elements like monkey-shaped wicker tables, antique tulip-red chests of drawers from Louboutin's personal collection, and outdoor bathtubs. The Jardim Português suites, located on the ground floor, offer private terraces leading to the hotel's colorful gardens. These suites often feature traditional tiled headboards with untraditional tie-dye patterns, hand-crafted rattan cupboard doors by Maison Gatti, and terracotta floor tiling interspersed with red-glazed accents. Attention to detail extends to the smallest items, such as monogrammed bed sheets, scarlet leather shoe horns, and distinctive room keys with vast leather tassels.
The hotel's culinary offerings include breakfast, served either in the restaurant, on the patio, or on private terraces, featuring fresh pastries, cold cuts, fruits, and eggs. The Xtian restaurant, located off the bar, offers a seasonal menu for lunch and dinner, focusing on light summer flavors such as gazpacho, scallops, cuttlefish with tomato rice, and elevated piri piri chicken. Desserts include salted caramel fondant and honey-drizzled cheesecakes. The bar serves classic cocktails and locally inspired drinks, often featuring Moscatel de Setúbal, a local fortified wine. In winter, the bar hosts talks with local historians by its large fireplace.
Amenities at Vermelho include a small pool, with guests provided with monogrammed jute bags, panama hats, and exclusive Loubi’s on the Beach towels. A Moroccan-inspired tower houses a spa treatment room, helmed by South African Ayurveda expert Timóteo Carmo. While not a full-sized spa, plans for a sister hotel with a comprehensive wellness suite are underway. Complimentary yoga sessions are offered on Saturdays, and bikes are available for exploring the surrounding rice fields and lagoon. The hotel adheres to contemporary eco-credentials, utilizing local, seasonal produce and refillable amenities. Accessibility is addressed with one accessible room and an elevator, though guests with specific needs are encouraged to contact the hotel in advance. The clientele is described as sophisticated and discerning, reflective of the hotel's luxurious and unique offering.
