How to make your home look instantly more stylish with clever use of colour
Tash Bradley, director of interior design and head colour specialist at Lick, shares her expert tips on transforming a home through the strategic use of colour. Bradley's passion for interior design and colour theory is deeply rooted, influenced by her mother, an interior designer, and further solidified during her studies at the University of Arts London. Initially pursuing fine art, she pivoted to interior design after a module on colour theory illuminated the profound impact colour has on living spaces. Recognizing a gap in the design world for championing colour, Bradley committed to making it her craft.
Her expertise led her to a pivotal role at Lick, a paint brand co-founded by her husband, Sam, and Lucas London. At Lick, Bradley curates a palette of no more than 100 shades, aiming to alleviate "colour paralysis" among consumers who are overwhelmed by excessive choice. Her objective is to educate and empower individuals to confidently embrace colour in their homes, moving beyond the default of neutral tones.
Bradley has provided over 5,000 one-to-one consultations and recently authored "Master the Art of Colour," a book designed to disseminate her knowledge to a broader audience. Her key recommendations for incorporating colour into home design include colour-drenching, which involves applying a single paint shade across various surfaces to create a sense of openness by minimizing visual breaks. She also advises experimenting with contrasts, suggesting that dark colours in small spaces can lead the eye to brighter, more expansive areas, making them feel larger.
Counterintuitively, Bradley notes that lighter colours are not always brighter due to their reflective nature, which can highlight shadows. She recommends choosing rich, pigmented neutrals for pale shades to absorb light effectively. For those hesitant to use colour boldly, she suggests starting small with elements like painted skirting boards, bedside tables, or colourful headboards. Art is presented as an ideal method for introducing vibrancy, as personal connection to artwork ensures comfort with the colours it brings. Bradley emphasizes the importance of considering the floor in design, recommending large, colourful rugs to significantly alter a room's feel. Finally, she encourages breaking traditional colour rules, advocating for personal preference and courage in selecting colours, exemplified by her appreciation for the pink and green combination. Her approach underscores colour as a universal language that, when used thoughtfully, can deeply influence the ambiance and perception of a home.
