The Block 2021 Kitchen reveal: Mitch and Mark's Kitchen, Week 7 | Season 17
Mitch and Mark faced a challenging week, transforming a raw space into a kitchen while also constructing a second kitchen for Tombolo Academy. Despite these hurdles, they successfully produced a visually appealing room, which Mitch described as the link that ties the house together, a dynamic and spectacular kitchen that offers a welcoming, soft, and dramatic yet not loud feel. However, judges identified significant functionality flaws alongside the aesthetic appeal.
Upon entering, the judges, including Darren Palmer, Shaynna Blaze, and Neale Whitaker, were immediately impressed by the room's beauty, particularly the benchtop. The kitchen showcased high ceilings, herringbone flooring, and a soft yet impactful color palette. Neale Whitaker noted an 'M' detail on the bench and praised the room's sophistication and refinement, suggesting that Mitch and Mark were 'packaging up the dream and selling it.' He predicted that many buyers would be instantly captivated by the space, an sentiment echoed by Scott Cam, who believed the room would score a perfect 10 for impact alone. Cam further conveyed that the kitchen, especially when integrated with the living and dining areas, clearly illustrated the potential success of the completed house.
Judges also appreciated the small seating area near the bay window, which Mitch and Mark had meticulously incorporated by raising the window height at the last minute. Shaynna felt this area softened the impact of the long island bench and described it as a beautiful choice, a 'stunning' and 'modern' nook. The kitchen was also equipped with numerous appliances, hinting at a chef's dream workspace.
The assessment shifted from aesthetics to practicality. Initially, Darren noted a positive 'cleaning station' setup in the island bench with logical placement for rubbish, washing, and dishwashing. However, concerns arose when judges discovered a deep drawer in the island bench filled with packaged food, prompting questions about the placement of plates and bowls and the absence of a pantry. Neale wondered if this implied a complete lack of a pantry.
While some drawers were appropriately designated for utensils and crockery, a thorough search revealed no traditional pantry in the main kitchen or even in the butler's pantry, which was equipped with a cooktop, dishwasher, sink, and oven but lacked food storage. Shaynna expressed disbelief, calling it 'crazy' and noting that all food storage would be limited to the fridge or drawers, a decision that clearly confused Neale.
When confronted, Mitch and Mark confirmed the absence of a traditional pantry, explaining their design choice focused on modern living with accessible drawers for food storage, contending it offered better visibility than a traditional cupboard. However, the judges remained unconvinced. Shaynna criticized it as a 'massive oversight' and deemed the kitchen impractical, believing it would deter potential buyers. Neale echoed this sentiment, calling the lack of a standard pantry a major functionality issue and criticizing Mitch and Mark for prioritizing 'style over substance.' Mitch and Mark, however, strongly disagreed, arguing that the judges were not abreast of modern kitchen design trends.
