David Rockwell: 2023 Interior Design Hall of Fame Icon
David Rockwell, a prominent figure in modern-day hospitality design and founder of Rockwell Group, has been inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame as an Icon. The article highlights his extensive career, which began in 1984, and the firm's growth to 330 employees with offices in New York, Los Angeles, and Madrid, having completed projects in 40 countries. Rockwell Group's diverse portfolio spans over 125 hotels, 500 restaurants, and hybrid hospitality ventures like NeueHouse Hollywood, Moynihan Train Hall, and a JetBlue terminal.
Rockwell's accomplishments extend beyond architecture and interior design to include Emmy Awards for production design for the 2010 and 2021 Academy Awards, and a 2016 Tony Award for the sets of 'She Loves Me,' making him the only architect to have achieved both honors. Despite these accolades, Rockwell is characterized by his continuous drive and curiosity, a trait observed by collaborators like Oskar Eustis, artistic director of The Public Theater, with whom Rockwell has designed numerous stage sets, including for Shakespeare in the Park productions.
His human-centered approach to design is central to his philosophy, which views architecture as deeply intertwined with the human experience. This is exemplified by his collaborations with figures like restaurateur Melba Wilson, with whom he worked on DineOut NYC, a pro-bono initiative during the 2020 pandemic to help restaurants stay afloat through outdoor dining solutions. Other pro-bono endeavors include Stoop NYC, designing for Citymeals on Wheels, and serving as chairman of DIFFA for over two decades. Architecture critic Paul Goldberger notes Rockwell's interest in how design relates to human interaction rather than a self-referential world.
Rockwell fosters a collaborative culture within his firm, often engaging unexpected creative partners such as choreographers. Shawn Sullivan, a 26-year veteran partner at Rockwell Group, praises this collaborative environment, while Greg Keffer highlights the firm's cross-disciplinary approach and the diverse talents it attracts. Eva Longoria, principal of the Madrid office, emphasizes their commitment to pushing boundaries and notes the female majority in her studio and the firm's executive team.
His inherent curiosity drives his exploration of how people connect and what makes experiences meaningful, leading to a constant questioning and experimentation within the firm. This inquisitive approach has also led him to author four books and design furnishings for various brands, including Stellar Works, Lasvit, Shaw Contract, Maya Romanoff, and Jim Thompson. Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg attests to Rockwell's imaginative creativity, technical brilliance, and deep civic-mindedness, citing collaborations like the Perelman Performing Arts Center and the Imagination Playground at Burling Slip, a post-9/11 revitalization project for Lower Manhattan.
The Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center in Washington, the firm's first higher-education project, demonstrates Rockwell's willingness to venture into new domains, applying his fresh perspective to foster connectivity and spontaneous encounters. This continuous exploration of new territory, rather than simply replicating past successes, underscores his defining characteristic of curiosity and commitment to innovative, human-centric design.
