Review: Heatmiser Neo Smart Thermostat
This article details the author's experience and review of the Heatmiser Neo Smart Thermostat system following a recent home renovation. The author, having a predilection for gadgets and recognizing the growing trend of home automation and the Internet of Things (IoT), decided to install a smart thermostat system to address long-standing heating inefficiencies in their multi-story home. The property, built in 2006, suffered from uneven heating, with downstairs areas being too cool and upstairs areas too warm, despite adjustments to radiators.
The renovation involved removing a wall between the kitchen and dining room, which necessitated relocating radiators. This led to the decision to install a wet underfloor heating system from Easy Fit Floor Heating on the entire ground floor. This comprehensive upgrade enabled the creation of six independent heating zones throughout the house (four on the ground floor utilizing underfloor heating, and two on the upper floors with existing radiators), plus a seventh zone for hot water control. The primary goal was to heat each zone independently for improved efficiency, focusing on occupied areas rather than the entire property.
In researching smart thermostat options, the author noted the high cost of popular systems like Nest, Hive, and Tado, especially for multi-zone configurations. Heatmiser Neo emerged as a suitable alternative, being a UK-based system specifically designed for zoned heating. The system comprises individual Neo thermostats (neoStats) for each zone, which are wired to the boiler, heating valve, or wiring center, and a web-connected neoHub that provides online functionality. This setup supports up to 32 rooms and eliminates the need for batteries in the thermostats. Control is facilitated through Android, iOS, and Windows Phone applications.
The author purchased a neoKit 2, which includes a neoHub and a hot water programmer, along with five additional neoStats, for a total cost of just over £500. While the installation process involved professionals for wiring, the article highlights the importance of proper cable routing, particularly when adding thermostats to rooms that previously lacked them. The neoStats are described as stylish and sleek, available in Sapphire Black, Glacier White, or Platinum Silver, and measuring 85mm x 85mm x 15mm. They feature a blue backlit display showing temperature and time, though the time display is noted as being small. The temperature reading is provided as a whole number on the device, with a more precise decimal reading available via the mobile apps. Each neoStat has a sensor at its base, recommending installation at eye level and away from heat sources. An optional floor sensor is also available for regulating heating based on ground temperature, which is useful for protecting certain floor coverings like wood.
