Spaces: A Pipe Dream
This article details a design challenge tackled by Amy McFadden, principal of Amy McFadden Interior Design, in a Winter Street penthouse. The primary issue involved bulky piping within a laundry closet that obstructed panoramic views from the kitchen. Instead of merely relocating or maintaining the closet, McFadden opted to eliminate it entirely. To address the resulting floor discrepancy and integrate the immovable pipes, she implemented a creative and industrial-inspired solution.
McFadden replaced the former closet area with grey porcelain herringbone tile, ensuring a seamless transition with the existing bamboo flooring and avoiding a patched appearance. The vent pipes, which could not be moved, were intentionally incorporated into the kitchen's aesthetic. She encased these pipes in galvanized metal tubing, specifically chosen to complement the horizontal ductwork already present on the ceiling. This strategic decision transformed a potential eyesore into a design feature, aligning with the condo's inherent industrial style.
Further concealing plumbing elements, the remaining pipes were integrated within a marble waterfall island. This design choice not only hid the functional components but also contributed to a sleek and modern aesthetic. The overall renovation resulted in a highly functional and visually appealing kitchen space, suitable for both cooking and entertaining. The design allowed for an unobstructed appreciation of the distant State House dome, demonstrating how a significant design obstacle was cleverly transformed into an integral and stylish component of the living area.
