Inside a Small but Mighty San Francisco Kitchen That Looks Like It’s Been Plucked from the English Countryside

This article delves into the design DNA of a modest San Francisco kitchen that successfully creates the illusion of an English country kitchen within a 1914 Arts and Crafts home. Lynn Kloythanomsup, founder of Landed Interiors & Homes, discusses how the brand-new kitchen achieves a lived-in, charming, and timeless aesthetic through a meticulous layering of rustic materials and vintage-inspired elements. The kitchen, initially relocated to the rear of the house to enhance natural light with more windows, utilizes a 'farmhouse palette' to create visual depth and character. The design intentionally avoids a 'too perfect' look, aiming for a space that appears centuries old. A key design element is the 'measured material overload,' which involves a blend of exposed brick, salvaged wooden beams, hand-painted wood floors, cedar paneling, shiplap-esque cabinets, and marble surfaces. This combination of ten distinct materials works in harmony, subtly making each a statement without overwhelming the eye. The hand-painted wood floors, featuring a checkerboard pattern created with Benjamin Moore floor paint by a decorative artist, are a standout feature. This technique, historically used to elevate ordinary floors, adds an unusual, old-timey effect. While such painted floors, especially in white, are prone to showing wear, the designer embraces this as adding to the kitchen's transportive charm, suggesting that creative and elaborate patterns can further enhance the look. Addressing the challenge of limited space, particularly the absence of a kitchen island, the design incorporates a simple banquette tucked into a window corner. This provides a necessary seating area for guests to interact with the cook or for a quiet morning coffee. Thoughtful details like under-bench drawers for storage and a cushioned seat enhance comfort and functionality. An antique English breakfast table and overhead sconces further define this zone. Bespoke storage solutions are integral to the kitchen's functionality and aesthetic. Inspired by the owner's artistic profession, Lynn Kloythanomsup designed custom drawers with angled containers for utensils, similar to paint brush bins. An overhead custom plate rack adds a vintage touch and keeps everyday plates accessible; a previous version, deemed 'too perfect,' was recrafted using scrap wood for a more rustic feel. A pantry in the hallway leading to the kitchen is designed for open accessibility, featuring glass doors and open shelving to display wine glasses, along with custom cubbies for wine bottles and niches for removable baskets, catering to the client's preference for everything being within reach when entertaining. Finally, the range hood is cleverly designed to disappear into the overall aesthetic. By wrapping it in faux brick tile, it seamlessly integrates with the walls, supporting the 'fantasy' of an English country house. This approach aims to make the range hood a subtle yet interesting element rather than a dominant statement, a concept that can be extended to tiled or plastered hoods matching their surrounding walls for a beautiful and elegant finish. The article also provides a curated edit of products that can help readers achieve a similar look, including a butcher block island, floral wallpaper, stoneware storage jars, wooden chopping boards, a wooden plate rack, and a farmhouse apron sink. #EnglishCountryKitchen #SanFranciscoHome #KitchenDesign #VintageInspired #RusticInteriors #HandPaintedFloors #BespokeStorage #MaterialLayering #DesignDNA #EnglishCountryKitchen #SanFranciscoHome #KitchenDesign #VintageInspired #RusticInteriors #HandPaintedFloors #BespokeStorage #MaterialLayering #DesignDNA
