10 compact kitchen islands for a spacious and free-flowing design
Kitchen islands are a highly sought-after feature in modern kitchen design, and this article presents ten compact solutions to integrate them effectively, even in smaller spaces, ensuring a spacious and free-flowing design. The first example showcases Lifestyle Kitchens' Gala Shaker range in Forest Green with a Dakar-shaded central island. This L-shaped kitchen design incorporates a multifunctional island for meal preparation, organized storage, an undercounter wine cooler, and an extended worktop for informal dining, blending functionality with social aspects.
DeVol Kitchens' design, despite a high ceiling, utilizes a U-shaped layout in a space with a modest footprint. A Shaker prep table serves as a central island, offering additional storage, meal prep space, and a social gathering point. The Calacatta Monet marble worktop introduces a luxurious element to the design. In another illustration, Masterclass Kitchens’ Hatfield Graphite range, installed by Home Sweet Home, features a freestanding island that visually expands the room. The ability to see the floor beneath the cabinets creates a cohesive and spacious ‘farmhouse-style’ aesthetic.
A bohemian-style beach house kitchen by DeVol Kitchens features a simple Shaker design with Linen cupboards and a Scullery Yellow prep table with a copper worktop. This compact island acts as a focal point without overcrowding the space, aligning with the property's cosy and welcoming interior. Omega Plc’s handleless Novus range includes a compact island designed for open-plan living, allowing easy movement while providing an alternative seating area, entertainment space, and ample storage, crucial for blended environments with limited cabinetry.
Masterclass Kitchens’ Melrose kitchen in Highland Stone with Portland Oak, designed by New Forest Designs, incorporates a neat central island with a slim wine cooler and a sociable seating area. Open shelving on the island reduces its visual bulk, making it feel less dominant and offering practical storage for books and glassware. Searle & Taylor Kitchens' Signature Bespoke Shaker kitchen features a substantial 1900 x 900mm island with tongue-and-groove end panels. Handpainted in Kigali 678, it includes storage cupboards, an integrated dishwasher, a cutlery drawer, open shelving, a stainless steel undermount sink, and a Quooker Flex 3-in-1 Boiling Water tap, providing comprehensive functionality.
London-based kitchen company PAD, in collaboration with Aura Architecture, designed a scheme using their bespoke Elgin cabinetry, finished in LICK Yellow 06. The compact island in this design efficiently integrates built-in wine storage, bookshelves, a Caple Belfast-style sink, additional storage, and a seating area, maximizing utility in a small footprint. Sachsenküchen's Edda Walnut Terra Brown wood style and Fiora Verde Comodoro super matt wall-hung cabinetry are presented in an open-plan setting, with a compact island featuring concealed organized storage and open decorative shelving for home accessories, promoting a seamless blend between kitchen and living areas.
Finally, The Myers Touch showcases an island handpainted in Farrow & Ball’s Elephant’s Breath, designed for both welcoming guests and delineating the working kitchen area. This dual-purpose island accommodates four stools, includes a Caple wine fridge, additional storage, and a bespoke solid oak worktop, effectively controlling the space while fostering social interaction.
