Ten striking kitchen islands designed to stand out
This lookbook showcases ten distinctive kitchen island designs from various international projects, emphasizing their role in enhancing both the aesthetic and functional aspects of modern kitchens. Kitchen islands are characterized as freestanding worktops accessible from all sides, originally conceived to offer flexible food preparation spaces. Architects and interior designers are increasingly using unusual and durable materials to create these features, transforming them into central design elements.
One featured project, Daddy Cool in Australia by Pattern Studio, presents a renovated Sydney terrace where a jade-green stone island with meandering lines serves as a striking centerpiece, deviating from traditional built-in joinery. In a New York apartment, GRT Architects clad a kitchen island in gleaming oxblood-coloured tiles, complementing a chequerboard mosaic floor and contributing to a refreshed layout. Róisín Lafferty's Lovers Walk in Cork, Ireland, features a "sensual red-toned jewel kitchen" anchored by a veiny quartzite island and ruby timber cabinets, highlighting a bold material choice. DAB Studio's Zwaag home in the Netherlands contrasts extensive hand-scraped oak and Afromosia wood with a boxy island featuring a waterfall countertop made from Arebescato Orobico marble.
Point Supreme Architects’ Athens apartment incorporates a bespoke wooden dining table with a steel frame that functions as a kitchen island, topped with a red Corian hob area. This design integrates into a colourful interior defined by a green plywood storage wall. Gundry & Ducker's White Rabbit House in London, a renovated 1970s home, showcases an oversized black and white terrazzo slab on a vivid green kitchen island, alongside architectural features like archways and a cantilevered staircase. Nimtim Architects’ Fruit Box extension to another London townhouse features a kitchen island made from traditional white tiles with curved edges, designed for safety and a simple aesthetic.
The House and the River in northern Lithuania by After Party introduces a sugary pink kitchen island with a pale pink terrazzo top, providing a vibrant colour accent to an otherwise white interior. This home also integrates a diagonally slicing terrace and a green roof. Esrawe Studio’s Loma Residence in Mexico City includes a minimalist kitchen with a green-toned granite island, which stands out against the oak "skin" wrapping the living spaces. Lastly, Studio 30 Architects’ Rylett House in west London features a skylit kitchen with an old carpenter's bench repurposed as an island, creating a contrast with smooth white cabinetry and newly laid terrazzo flooring. These examples collectively demonstrate how diverse materials and innovative designs can transform kitchen islands into functional art pieces within contemporary homes.
