10 statement island worktops for the ultimate kitchen centrepiece
This article explores ten distinctive kitchen island worktops, highlighting their design, materials, and aesthetic impact as central features in kitchen schemes. The selection showcases a variety of materials, from natural stones like marble and quartzite to engineered surfaces such as porcelain and terrazzo, each chosen for its unique visual appeal and functional properties. Each example demonstrates how the worktop not only serves a practical purpose but also acts as a dramatic focal point, influencing the overall style and personality of the kitchen.
Cullifords' Lagoa Pink Marble worktop, for instance, is characterized by its natural blend of dramatic dark veining through soft pink, grey, and white clouds. This polished Portuguese marble, 20mm thick, is designed to be scratch, stain, UV, and heat resistant, making it both durable and an artistic statement. Similarly, Roundhouse's Urbo Kitchen features African Fusion Satinato on its worktop and central island, offering a daring elegance through its strong, dark hues contrasted with white and gold veining. This is paired with Farrow & Ball's Railings coloured lacquer cabinetry and a glass splashback to create a cohesive and stylish design.
British Standard, in collaboration with Charlotte Cosby of Farrow & Ball, presents a unique island made from mottled jade terrazzo and resin. This piece stands out with its vibrant colors and bold patterns, with surrounding elements in mineral green and Farrow & Ball's Setting Plaster on walls and cabinetry, softening the countertop's stark lines. Caesarstone’s Porcelain Collection introduces 510 Impermia, a 12mm thick surface with a dramatic Black base animated by white veining, available in Honed or Ultra Rough Finish. It offers the aesthetic of natural stone with the resilience and heat resistance of sintered porcelain.
Ledbury Studio's Camden kitchen project features a work surface by Lara Bohinc of Bohinc Studio, crafted from Italian marbles. Bohinc's signature rounded shapes, in earth tones and inlaid into an aged-brass edge trim, elevate the island into a piece of art. Humphrey Munson’s kitchen design highlights a Bianco Eclipsia quartzite island, bookmatched for a continuous flow down the waterfall edge. This light-hued quartzite contrasts with Bowler Black island cabinetry, while surrounding furniture in Tailored Grey echoes the island’s lighter tones.
Another Roundhouse Urbo and Metro Kitchen features a central island in Farrow & Ball’s Pitch Black with an antique brass plinth and a Patagonia Natural Quartzite worktop. This design includes an internal lighting system that creates a bold glow from within the natural stone, enhanced by a Blenheim Antique mirror splashback. RAK Ceramics’ Elle Marble offers the natural beauty of marble in durable porcelain tiles, available in white with dark veining or black with white highlights, and in various sizes for islands and splashbacks.
CRL Stone’s Ceralsio collection includes Macchia Vecchia, an impermeable and stain-resistant ceramic worktop with a marble-inspired pattern and gold veining on a white background. This versatile surface, available in natural or polished finish and 20mm thickness, is suitable for various kitchen applications. Finally, John Willox Design's sustainable kitchen, utilizing Rotpunkt products, features an island with a 20mm Dekton worktop in Trilium. This worktop offers a mix of volcanic blacks and greys and is made with up to 80% recycled material, embodying an environmentally friendly industrial look.
