This expert’s ‘BRB’ technique is something I'll forever use when painting wall paneling to avoid drips and paint build-up

Painting wall paneling presents unique challenges compared to painting a flat wall, such as paint accumulating in grooves and the risk of damaging delicate composite wood panels during sanding. This guide, developed with professional painters and decorators, outlines a five-step process for achieving a flawless finish on wall paneling, including a specialized application technique. The first crucial step is proper preparation, beginning with sanding and priming. Most wall paneling features a glossy polyurethane finish, necessitating light sanding to create a textured surface for paint adhesion. For lightweight veneers, gentle sanding is essential to prevent exposing the underlying fiberboard. Anthony Kulikowski, owner of Five Star Painting, emphasizes the importance of using an oil-based or high-adhesion latex primer for unstained wood. If the wood is already painted or stained, Tila Lee of Pretty in Paint School suggests a shellac primer to prevent tannin bleed-through, recommending a long-wearing, stain-blocking primer tailored to the specific situation. Incorrect or insufficient preparation, particularly sanding and priming, is identified as a common cause of painting issues. The second step involves caulking the seams. Whether aiming for a grooved shiplap look or classic Shaker paneling, filling seams with caulk ensures optimal results. Tila Lee advises that if the surface is already painted, caulking can precede priming, but generally, the sequence should be sand, prime, caulk, then prime again. For a smooth wall surface, spackle is recommended over caulk due to its stiffer consistency, which allows for shaping with sandpaper after drying to achieve an even finish. Selecting the appropriate paint is the third step. When painting, it is advisable to cut in first with a paintbrush before using a roller. It is crucial to avoid overloading brushes or rollers, especially on paneled walls, to prevent paint from collecting in grooves and dripping. Tila Lee recommends enamel paints for their lacquer-like appearance and hard finish, which protects the surface. She specifically suggests Sherwin Williams' All-surface Enamel, applied with a mohair roller sleeve for self-leveling. Typically, two coats are sufficient, though more may be needed when covering dark colors with light ones. The fourth step highlights the importance of using the correct roller. The grooves in paneling make an even coat challenging. For deep grooves, a combination of a brush and roller is best. Anthony Kulikowski recommends a 3/8-inch nap microfiber roller cover, suitable for both paint and primer, to reach into the grooves. For brushes, a white china bristle or ox hair brush is advised for oil-based primers. The final step introduces Tila Lee's 'BRB' (brush, roll, brush) application technique, designed for a professional-grade finish. This method involves first brushing paint into cuts and corners, then rolling the main surfaces. The critical third 'brush' step involves going back to knock off any paint buildup in tricky areas like corners and curves. This technique is particularly effective for uneven surfaces like paneling, railings, and molding, where paint buildup and drips are common. The 'BRB' technique ensures the smoothest possible results by addressing potential imperfections before the paint dries, ultimately enhancing the final aesthetic of the newly painted paneling. #WallPaneling #PaintingTechniques #DIYHomeImprovement #InteriorPainting #HomeDecor #PaintApplication #SurfacePreparation #EnamelPaint #BRBTechnique #WallPaneling #PaintingTechniques #DIYHomeImprovement #InteriorPainting #HomeDecor #PaintApplication #SurfacePreparation #EnamelPaint #BRBTechnique
