A Centuries-Old Decorative Tradition Inspires Michelle Robinson’s Vibrant Weavings
Michelle Robinson, a Sydney-based artist, creates vibrant and textured fiber weavings, drawing inspiration from the centuries-old decorative art of passementerie. With over twenty years of experience in the soft furnishings and upholstery industry, Robinson developed a deep appreciation for textiles. Her artistic practice began as a way to further explore her passion for decor, allowing her to experiment with numerous color combinations and evoke energy through her creations. She has been weaving for four years, during which she enrolled in a masterclass in passementerie, a 16th and 17th-century European decorative art form that focuses on ornate trimmings, such as edging and tassels for clothing and furniture. This technique, derived from the archaic French word 'passement' meaning 'lace,' captivated Robinson, reminding her of the beautiful braids she encountered in her decorating career. The masterclass, led by U.K.-based artist Elizabeth Ashdown, provided Robinson with an opportunity to learn traditional methods and contribute to keeping the craft alive.
Robinson's woven pieces reference the ornamental plaits and trims historically used in furniture and garments. She produces wall hangings and accessories, including bookmarks, on frame looms. Her work combines traditional weaving techniques with a contemporary aesthetic, resulting in geometric designs that are both nostalgic and playful. Robinson is continuously experimenting and learning new techniques, primarily using natural fibers. She also incorporates repurposed items, such as knitting needles and re-spun fibers, and often finishes her weavings with intricate hand-sewn details. She emphasizes that these details are what draw viewers into her artwork.
Her creative process is characterized by a constant exploration of how different threads behave within the structure of her weavings, especially as she investigates scaling up the medium. This dedication to experimentation, coupled with her deep understanding of textiles and color, allows her to produce unique and expressive works. Robinson's art is a testament to the enduring appeal of traditional crafts and the potential for contemporary interpretation. Her vibrant weavings not only showcase her technical skill but also her ability to infuse historical decorative traditions with a fresh, modern sensibility. Through her work, she aims to share the joyful and energetic impact that color can have on others.
Robinson frequently makes her pieces available for purchase on Etsy, and additional examples of her work can be found on her Instagram page. Her artistic journey highlights the intersection of traditional craft, personal passion, and a commitment to continuous learning and innovation in the field of textile art.
