Linda Hayslett’s sophisticated medley of florid wallpapers, deep blue tiles and gold-flecked fabrics
Linda Hayslett, an interior designer based in Los Angeles with a background as a celebrity stylist, infuses her projects with Hollywood glamour, emphasizing the strategic use of gold to elevate even practical materials. Her design-build studio, LH.Designs, focuses on integrating design with construction from concept to completion, aiming to provide clients with a holistic lifestyle experience. Hayslett's approach expertly balances aesthetic appeal with functionality, a philosophy clearly reflected in her mood board, which is inspired by a current renovation project.
The mood board showcases a harmonious blend of dark-hued tiles, polished brass hardware, and gold-flecked wallpaper, described by Hayslett as "sophisticated beauty with an edge." The design palette revolves around four primary colors: black, navy, plum, and gold, which are consistently applied throughout the home to create a cohesive flow. Golden tones in fixtures and fabrics offer a striking contrast to the deeper shades, ensuring visual continuity.
Hayslett details her distinctive material selections. For paint, she prioritizes the Benjamin Moore Black Interior Designers Inc. Fan Deck, explaining that paint colors are chosen last, after all main elements like wallpaper, tile, and cabinetry are in place, to accurately account for lighting and spatial dynamics. Bathroom accessories include the Kohler Parallel Robe Hook in brushed brass, selected for its modern aesthetic and practical design that securely holds towels, perfectly complementing the home's warm gold accents.
For the primary bedroom, she chose She She's Spring Chinoiserie Wallpaper in Rose, drawing a connection to the plum tile in the en-suite bathroom and aiming to create a serene atmosphere. In the living room, GP & J Baker's Coniston Velvet Fabric in Ochre was selected for the sofa to provide a vibrant contrast against the wallpaper. Kitchen cabinetry will feature Ralph Lauren Amalfi Navy paint, chosen for its balanced navy hue that avoids being too dark or too blue.
Decorative elements include pottery by Croft House, valued for its texture and the belief that imperfect items add character and a story to a home. For a basement bathroom, Commercial Wall Decor's Shadow Leaves Wallpaper in Black Pearl will impart a luxurious feel while maintaining coherence with the overall design. The Croft House Ynez Dining Table, made of walnut, serves as a grounding piece, with other walnut furniture planned throughout the home to foster a warm, casual yet luxurious ambiance.
Hardware selections include Emtek's Select L-Square Faceted Lever in satin brass for all interior doors, chosen for its faceted design that integrates with the home's brass and gold accents. Wolf-Gordon's Kabuto Wallcovering in Amazonite, with its golden sparkle, is intended to make the living room shine. For the guest bathroom flooring, Trend's Etherium by E-Stone La Veneziana Tile in Nero Ducale was picked for its unique hints of blue within a terrazzo pattern, tying into the broader navy theme. Bedrosians' Cloé Ceramic Tile in Blue is used for the guest bathroom, offering a moody, dark navy subway tile that contrasts with gold plumbing fixtures. The primary bathroom floor features Artistic Tile's Nano Corten Tile in Copper, an imperfect metallic rust-colored tile that complements the plum subway tile in the shower, enhancing the space's luxurious feel. River reeds are incorporated for their natural, calming presence. S. Harris at Fabricut's Moa Fabric in Tamarind, a woven linen designed by Hayslett with the Black Artists + Designers Guild, will be used on a Croft House Sierra chair, fulfilling a client request. Another Bedrosians' Cloé Ceramic Tile, this time in Green, will serve as an accent trim in the guest bathroom shower, adding an interesting visual element. Finally, Total Home Distributors' Village Glossy Tile in Aubergine, a local Los Angeles product, is chosen as a handmade-look plum backdrop for a large Kohler tub in the primary bathroom, intended as a showpiece.
