In the Rural Philippines, a House Unlike Anything Else on the Islands

The article details the transformation of an old family beach house in the rural Philippine province of Pangasinan, owned by Romana de Vera, the entrepreneur behind Romana Peanut Brittle. Originally a bamboo-and-mahogany pavilion, the house fell into disrepair over half a century. While the family contemplated its fate, Federico de Vera, one of Romana’s ten children and a renowned dealer of objects and jewelry in New York, decided to take on the renovation project himself. Federico, who resides primarily in upstate New York, stepped in due to concerns about his siblings' design choices and his desire to create something pleasing for his discerning mother, Romana. Federico's connection with his mother's aesthetic preferences goes back to his childhood, where he would help her select jewelry. This project became a personal mission for him, driven by a desire to fulfill his mother’s expectations. After his sister's initial renovation efforts were criticized, Federico took full control, ensuring a cohesive and complete vision. The house, finished a year and a half after Federico embarked on the project, stands as a testament to his unique design philosophy, which blends varied influences and materials. The renovation involved extensive international travel for Federico and coordination with another sister who acted as forewoman. The renovated structure, approximately 4,000 square feet, features a fortress-like coated-concrete design behind the original wooden facade. Its style draws inspiration from midcentury Palm Springs Modernism with clean lines, and 1960s-era Brazilian Tropical Brutalism, characterized by a sense of openness achieved through hundreds of custom-made 'dV' logo breeze blocks. These blocks, referencing early 1900s Wiener Werkstätte monograms, are a distinctive element of the new walls. The ground floor incorporates an enclosed kitchen that opens into an alfresco living and dining room, partially covered by the original thatched roof. Throughout the home, Federico collaborated with traditional Filipino artisans, guiding them to produce custom pieces that align with his unique aesthetic, such as brightly striped plastic rattan furniture and benches crafted from antique rice mortars. Federico's design approach embraces a fusion of elements, evident in his furniture designs that merge minimalist glass-and-stainless steel with repurposed traditional items. He has been creating similar designs since establishing his business in San Francisco in 1991. The art within the house, including portraits of his parents commissioned from a local artist, predominantly features Filipino works, emphasizing a homage to the island's culture. The three upstairs bedrooms are distinctively themed, moving from indigenous to colonial influences, with Federico’s own room serving as a collage of diverse elements. A semi-exposed hallway leads to Romana’s private quarters, a single-story rotunda accessed by a vintage glass-and-wood door painted in Federico’s signature fire engine red. Her room is a vibrant mix of colors and playful elements, including repainted antique beds and a unique totem crafted from local wood and crowned with a fringed handbag. The overall design harmoniously combines rarefied and humble, bold and simple, salvaged and self-created elements, culminating in a space that his mother profoundly appreciates. #PhilippineArchitecture #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #FedericoDeVera #TropicalModernism #FamilyHome #ArtisanCraftsmanship #CulturalHomage #SustainableDesign #PhilippineArchitecture #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #FedericoDeVera #TropicalModernism #FamilyHome #ArtisanCraftsmanship #CulturalHomage #SustainableDesign
