Emily Henderson Designed Her Portland Farm’s Garden Around a Plunge Pool—Here’s Why
Designer Emily Henderson undertook a significant backyard renovation at her Portland, Oregon, property, which included modifying a sports court, installing a pool area, pool house, garden, and flagstone pathways, alongside a new lawn. The central feature of this overhaul is a plunge pool, a decision influenced by practicality and climate considerations. Henderson initially considered a large pool for her nearly three-acre farm but concluded it was impractical for the Pacific Northwest climate, where a full-sized pool would be covered for much of the year. Despite the increasing summer heat, a traditional pool didn't align with her family's needs or local climate. She also explored bio-dynamic swimming pools but found them unsuitable.
The search for a viable water feature led her to Soake Pools, whose plunge pools offered a solution that met all her requirements. Plunge pools are appealing due to their year-round usability, functioning as both a hot tub and a regular pool, and their low-maintenance features, including lower installation, heating, and upkeep costs. These factors were crucial in her decision-making process. Henderson envisioned the garden around the plunge pool, designing it to be a discreet "secret surprise water feature" integrated with potted plants, greenery, and a wooden split rail fence, positioned centrally to the greenhouse and vegetable garden. This design allows the pool to blend seamlessly with the environment when not in use, yet remains easily accessible.
The hardscape around the pool consists of rectangular flagstone, providing ample space for activity without encroaching on the garden. Henderson collaborated with landscape designer Studio Campo to achieve a rustic aesthetic with abundant greenery, and Native Northwest managed the pool installation. The choice of a smaller plunge pool, measuring 13’ x 7’, saved both time and money, which was then reallocated to enhance the surrounding landscaping. The collaboration with Soake Pools was comprehensive, covering all aspects from design and layout to tile selection, cover choices, and logistical coordination with installers and the landscape team.
The plunge pool has become the focal point of the backyard, serving as a gathering spot and a place to relax after activities, such as playing on the nearby pickleball court. Henderson expresses satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting that the plunge pool fulfills their needs and wants while also being aesthetically pleasing. Its understated design, incorporating wild grasses and a split rail fence, complements the farm's vibe. Beyond providing a space for swimming with her children, it functions as an ideal setting for entertaining, where kids and their friends can swim, play pickleball, and enjoy nature.
