This Midcentury Ranch Might Be the Most Nostalgic Home in California
Nathan Turner and Eric Hughes, a lifestyle expert and a decorator, respectively, have created a nostalgic midcentury ranch home in Ojai, California, that reflects their deep generational ties to the state and their personal histories. The couple discovered this 1950s board-and-batten house during the pandemic and were drawn to Ojai’s timeless charm, with its independent shops, vibrant farmers’ markets, and Spanish Colonial architecture. Their goal was to preserve the home's historical integrity while infusing it with sentimental touches.
The renovation of the ranch house involved thoughtful modifications, such as adding two bathrooms and enlarging the kitchen. Despite these changes, the couple ensured that all new architectural elements, including salvaged wood beams, Dutch doors, vintage brick floors, and a landscape with citrus trees, remained true to the midcentury California ranch aesthetic. The interior design prioritizes personal connection and comfort, with Nathan emphasizing the importance of surrounding oneself with meaningful objects, particularly those related to family. The home is filled with cherished items, from portraits of their pets and passed-down cast-iron skillets to prizes won by Nathan's great-grandfather, all contributing to a sense of immense comfort and personal narrative.
The entrance features a black barn-style Dutch door that opens into a space adorned with framed pet portraits, each with a story meticulously documented by Nathan. Eric’s childhood handprint and a monogrammed mirror crafted by Nathan’s father further personalize the entry. The living room exudes rustic refinement with walls covered in stick-on wood planks and a ceiling clad in salvaged cedar pickets, creating a barnwood-cabin ambiance. Furnishings like a striped sofa and pillows made from handwoven vintage fabrics echo the warm hues of old trading blankets. Nathan's passion for collecting is evident in the living room's display of cattle show ribbons earned by his family and a vintage movie poster found and framed by Eric, adding cultural depth.
The kitchen blends rustic and modern elements, featuring natural Shaker-style cabinets, handmade tiles, and reclaimed brick floors. A half barn door connects the kitchen to the living room, offering a sense of separation while maintaining conversational flow. A pegboard in the kitchen holds Nathan's collection of cast-iron skillets, which serve a practical purpose and evoke childhood memories. Rustic wood shelves display a portion of his extensive collection of midcentury Mexican pottery, used for entertaining large gatherings. The dining room showcases a 1920s map detailing the growth of America and the Western expansion, surrounded by mix-and-match pressed-back oak dining chairs reminiscent of his family’s ranch furniture. A Spanish chandelier from Early California Antiques Shop completes the historical tableau, alongside vintage agave paintings that evoke California's essence.
The primary bedroom draws inspiration from Ojai's natural landscape, featuring muted green walls and an angled white ceiling. A handcrafted Monterey-style keyhole bed is adorned with patterned linens and an orange-checked quilt, while Western-style barn doors with iron strappings, custom-made during the renovation, conceal closets. A large 19th-century English dog portrait and a hanging lantern in the sitting area add vintage charm. The primary bathroom maintains a clean, early California aesthetic with a cast-iron tub, milk glass ceiling lights, and black floor tiles, channeling an apothecary vibe. The guest room, vibrant and cheerful, features twin beds with a mix of checks against Nathan’s “Orange Crush” wallpaper, part of his Wallshøppe collection. The adjacent bathroom door is hand-painted with an orange tree motif, complementing the bedroom's theme, and features Nathan's custom-designed “Ojai Stripe” wallpaper.
Outdoor spaces are as integral to the home's living experience as the interiors. The breakfast patio features a vintage grizzly bear California state flag, a nod to Nathan's family ranch, and a cushioned bench overlooking the pool. The outdoor kitchen, a favored spot for Nathan, is a fully functional space with vintage wood beams, reclaimed siding, poured concrete countertops, and a Spanish Mission candelabra. Cactus paddles and cast-iron pans decorate the walls, reflecting Nathan's culinary interests and love for local ingredients. The container pool, set just 18 inches above grade, resembles a watering trough and is surrounded by natural grasses and fruit trees. Boardwalks connect various outdoor areas, including an outdoor shower, enhancing the seamless flow between indoor and outdoor living. The entire home is a testament to blending personal history, regional heritage, and functional design into a cohesive and inviting living space.
