This genius TikTok hack removed a popcorn ceiling using only water - here's how to do it

Popcorn ceilings, also known as stipple or acoustic ceilings, were prevalent from the 1950s to the 1980s due to their sound-deadening properties. However, they are now considered outdated, and many homeowners seek to remove them. A TikTok video by cashmere_baby, with 16 million views, demonstrates a method for removing popcorn ceilings using only hot water and a scraper, making the process appear simple and cost-effective. This article delves into the legitimacy of this hack, offering insights from decorating experts and providing a step-by-step guide for those considering this DIY project. Before attempting any popcorn ceiling removal, it is crucial to address the potential presence of asbestos. Thomas Goodman, a property and construction expert, warns that homes built before the early 1990s might contain asbestos in popcorn ceilings. Asbestos is a carcinogenic substance that releases fine dust when disturbed, posing significant health risks if inhaled. Therefore, professional testing for asbestos is a mandatory first step. If asbestos is detected, it is recommended to hire certified professionals for safe removal. Assuming the ceiling is free of asbestos, proper preparation is essential due to the messy nature of the task. Homeowners should cover all floors and furniture with dust sheets, and ideally, remove all belongings from the room. Personal protective equipment, including goggles and a mask, is necessary to prevent debris from falling into eyes or being inhaled. Natalie White from Rated People emphasizes the importance of safety during the process. Once the room is prepared and personal safety measures are in place, the removal process involves spraying the ceiling with water. A spray bottle, preferably a pressurized one for easier application, is used to moisten small sections of the ceiling. It is important not to oversaturate the ceiling to avoid damaging the drywall underneath. After spraying, the water needs to sit for approximately 15 minutes to allow it to penetrate and soften the popcorn texture. Following the soaking period, a drywall knife or scraper is used to scrape away the softened texture. The popcorn ceiling should come off relatively easily. If not, the area should be re-sprayed and allowed to sit for another 5 minutes before trying again. After all the texture is removed, any rough spots can be sanded down, and a fresh coat of paint can be applied to achieve a smooth, updated ceiling. While the water-based method is straightforward, it is a time-consuming endeavor. Alternative solutions for addressing popcorn ceilings include sanding them down for a less prominent texture, although this may not result in a perfectly smooth finish, or covering them with plaster or cladding to completely conceal the texture, bypassing the removal process entirely. #PopcornCeilingRemoval #DIYHomeImprovement #HomeRenovation #CeilingMakeover #AsbestosAwareness #InteriorDesign #TikTokHack #HomeMaintenance #DecoratingTips #PopcornCeilingRemoval #DIYHomeImprovement #HomeRenovation #CeilingMakeover #AsbestosAwareness #InteriorDesign #TikTokHack #HomeMaintenance #DecoratingTips
