Lyndsay From Unsellable Houses Says This Kitchen Upgrade Will Make Your Space Feel Homier Than Ever

Modern kitchens, despite their conveniences, can sometimes lack a warm and welcoming feel. Lyndsay Lamb, host of HGTV's "Unsellable Houses," suggests shiplap as an effective design element to introduce character and depth, creating a cozier atmosphere in the kitchen. Traditionally, shiplap refers to a wood paneling style where panels overlap, forming a shallow ridged texture. However, the term is now often used more broadly to describe midsized or wide wood paneling, particularly when used for accent walls. Lamb emphasizes that when used judiciously, shiplap can transform a kitchen into a more inviting space without overwhelming it. Lamb illustrates this concept with an example from one of her renovation projects, where shiplap was installed on the kitchen ceiling. This choice aimed to add a touch of hominess to the space. The shiplap was coordinated with classic white cabinets, which not only added definition but also helped to warm up the modern kitchen and infuse it with a slightly more traditional aesthetic. The once sterile appearance of streamlined modern cabinetry and stainless steel appliances was softened by the wood-paneled ceiling. Color coordination was also a key aspect of Lamb's design. The white shiplap ceiling matched the cabinets, maintaining a light and airy feel, while the natural dark lines between the wood panels introduced organic depth to the design. When considering shiplap styling, Lamb's project demonstrates that applying it solely to the ceiling can provide texture without dominating the room. For those planning a similar design, it is recommended to install the wood panels parallel to the length of the room. This technique helps to elongate the space and prevent the kitchen from feeling cramped. Homeowners can replicate Lamb's style by opting for a white finish for a clean, crisp look, or they can choose to stain the panels for a softer, more natural aesthetic. Alternatively, shiplap can be used on an accent wall or as a backsplash instead of the ceiling. A breakfast nook, for instance, is an ideal location for a shiplap wall, especially when using the traditional layered shiplap style with horizontal panels. The panels can be painted in various colors, from pastels for a beachy ambiance to deep charcoal for a dramatic effect. Adding hooks to hang decorative kitchenware and family mementos can further enhance the homey vignette, contributing to a magical and inviting kitchen environment. #KitchenDesign #HomeImprovement #Shiplap #InteriorDesign #LyndsayLamb #HGTV #HomeyKitchen #DesignHacks #AccentWalls #KitchenDesign #HomeImprovement #Shiplap #InteriorDesign #LyndsayLamb #HGTV #HomeyKitchen #DesignHacks #AccentWalls
