Tali Roth’s nostalgic mix of cashmere carpeting, colorful marbles and Venetian plaster finishes
Tali Roth, a Melbourne-based designer known for cultivating spaces that tell a story, shares her current design inspirations, particularly influenced by her longing for New York summer while experiencing winter in Australia. Her design philosophy emphasizes playfully patterned pieces crafted from timeless materials, aiming to create intimate rooms that reflect the inhabitants' personalities. Roth's mood board, featured in Business of Home's 'What I Love' series, showcases a balanced blend of warm and cool hues, energized by graphic motifs, and an experimental approach to juxtaposing blues and grays with camel and caramel tones.
Roth details 15 elements that comprise her current design scheme. The 'Flash Wallcovering in Pistachio' by Kirkby Design, a raffia-textured wallpaper with a subtle yet statement-making flame pattern, is highlighted for its timelessness and ability to complement curved designs. She incorporates the 'Babette Trim in Gustavian Blue' by Inge Holst, a bullion trim that adds an old-world touch to contemporary soft furnishings. The 'Forget-Me-Not fabric in Acqua' by Rubelli is chosen for its rich history, reinterpreted with modern colors and trim.
For hard surfaces, Roth selects 'Roman Travertine,' 'Blue Marine,' and 'Verde Antigua' marbles from BAS Stone, noting the travertine's earthy and timeless quality and the complementary nature of the blue and green accents. Carpeting includes the 'Galet Rug in Indigo' by Bremworth Wool Rugs, favored for bedrooms due to its grounding and durable looped wool texture, and the luxurious 'Loose Cashmere Carpet in Grey' by Marc Phillips for its amazing handle and versatile color.
Personal touches are also integrated, such as a Selenite crystal, gifted at a kundalini-themed baby shower, representing the need for calm and serenity in a designer's life. Custom Venetian plaster by San Marco Group is praised for its wall textures, which look stunning in any tone but particularly in cool tones, creating an interesting tension with the applied texture's warmth. Midcentury design, a continuous source of inspiration, is represented by the book 'Decorative Art 50s' by Taschen.
Fabrics like the 'Teddy Mohair Fabric in Bambi' by Pierre Frey are selected for their perfect caramel color, which warms up any space. The 'Dappled Brick Fabric in Sky Blue' by Luke Edward Hall for Rubelli is admired for its patterns and geometry, which integrate seamlessly into the calm palette without overwhelming it. Trims such as the 'Aria Silk Brush Fringe in Vapor' by Samuel & Sons are suggested for enhancing sofas, bed heads, and throw cushions.
Further fabric selections include 'Helia Fabric in 0733' by Raf Simons for Kvadrat, a durable and flexible tight boucle in sky blue, suitable for various applications. The 'Afua Fabric in Walnut' by Sister by Studio Ashby for Yarn Collective is chosen for its simple geometry and stars, balancing California cool with English Country aesthetics. Finally, a candle from Cour des Vosges at Evok serves as an endlessly inspiring element, transporting Roth to one of her favorite Parisian hotels through its scent.
