Mark Krebs works with Indian weavers to make carpets more affordable
Davin Cowper, founder of the Toronto-based company Mark Krebs, aims to transform how consumers perceive and acquire home furnishings, specifically rugs. He emphasizes the importance of understanding the entire product lifecycle, from its origin to its eventual placement in a home, fostering critical thinking about the objects we choose to live with. Cowper views these products as having their own 'origin stories' and 'lives,' and his mission is to ensure they are well-made and durable, contributing positively to their environment for a prolonged period.
Cowper's journey to establish Mark Krebs was driven by his extensive experience as a designer within the homeware industry. Recognizing a gap in the market and a desire to create a more direct and transparent supply chain, he launched his company in early 2020. His business model is centered on directly sourcing and collaborating with rug weavers in India. This direct-to-consumer approach, facilitated by an online platform, allows Mark Krebs to offer high-quality, handmade rugs at significantly more affordable price points than traditional retail channels. This affordability does not compromise the quality of materials or the integrity of the weaving process, which is a core tenet of his brand.
The inaugural collection from Mark Krebs showcases four distinct flatweave rugs, all meticulously handmade in Uttar Pradesh, India, the country's most populous state. These designs are a testament to true collaboration, developed in partnership with the local weavers who bring generations of expertise to their craft. The rugs are constructed using 100 percent natural fibers, including wool, cotton, and linen, ensuring both sustainability and a luxurious feel. This close working relationship between Cowper and the artisans highlights a creative process that he poetically describes as a 'dance,' where ideas and skills are exchanged to produce unique and meaningful pieces.
By engaging directly with the makers, Mark Krebs not only supports these traditional weaving communities but also brings authentic, artisan-crafted products to a broader audience at accessible prices. This model challenges conventional retail markups and promotes a more ethical and sustainable approach to home decoration. The company's offerings include the Rose Garden Area Rug (6’x9’) priced at $569, the Aquarius Area Rug (4’6”x6’9”) for $379, and the Rain Spot Rug (2’x3’) for $65, demonstrating the range of sizes and price points available while maintaining a commitment to quality and craftsmanship. Through this initiative, Cowper is not just selling rugs; he is advocating for a more conscious consumption of home goods, where the story behind each item is as valued as its aesthetic appeal.
