An Under-$50 Headboard Hack Inspired by an Iconic Finnish Chair
This article details a cost-effective DIY project for creating a stylish headboard inspired by Alvar Aalto's iconic 611 chairs, utilizing readily available materials from IKEA and nylon webbing. The project, conceived by crafter Julie Katrine Andersen from Copenhagen, offers a creative solution for individuals who find traditional lumberyard supplies difficult to access.
The core of the hack involves repurposing an IKEA Ivar side unit, which is sold separately and comes in various heights, making it suitable for different bed sizes. Andersen chose to use a $30 pack of nylon webbing purchased from eBay, noting that only a portion of the 50-meter roll was needed for the project, leaving ample material for future crafts.
The first step in the process is to prepare the Ivar frame by sawing off its legs to achieve a uniform appearance. Precision is emphasized in mapping out the webbing placement, with Andersen recommending marking lines on the back of the board to ensure even spacing between each strap. This meticulous planning is crucial for the aesthetic outcome of the headboard.
Following the mapping, the nylon webbing is trimmed to the appropriate length, allowing enough material to fold around the frame and secure it at the back, thereby concealing any excess fabric when installed. A critical step highlighted is singeing the ends of the nylon webbing with a lighter. This prevents the material from unraveling over time, ensuring the longevity and neatness of the headboard.
The assembly proceeds by first stapling the short straps securely to the back of the longer sides of the frame, ensuring each band is taut. Subsequently, the longer straps are woven over and under, mimicking the design of Aalto's chairs, and then fastened to the backs of the shorter ends of the frame. The final stage involves mounting the headboard to the wall.
For installation, hanging brackets are screwed horizontally into the top and bottom edges of the frame's long sides. The article specifically advises against vertical orientation for the brackets to prevent accidental dislodgement. Pencil marks on the wall indicate where the interlocking mounts should be drilled, after which the hardware is attached, and the headboard is slid into place. This DIY project provides an affordable alternative to purchasing an expensive bed frame, offering a personalized and stylish solution for bedroom decor.
