Home Tour: Café-style home in Ridgewood Condominium along Holland Road designed for kids
This article highlights the family home of Shi Xiao Wei and Dickson Seow, located in Ridgewood Condominium along Holland Road, designed to be a vibrant and interactive space for their preteen children, Ashley and Brandon. The parents intentionally restrict screen time, encouraging creative and hands-on activities, which influenced the home's design philosophy. The family sought an older condominium development to ensure ample space for their growing children and proximity to their school, eventually settling on a unit in Ridgewood Condominium in 2014. The unit, already renovated two years prior, featured an urban loft aesthetic with white brick feature walls and black chalkboard cabinet doors in the dining area, which the new owners appreciated, requiring minimal additional renovation.
The core of Ms. Shi's design approach was to foster interaction and play among her children. A large 10-seater dining table, treated for outdoor use, serves as a versatile hub for various activities such as painting, board games, and handicrafts, making it a central and beloved piece of furniture. The generous space of the older condominium allowed for converting one of the bedrooms into a dedicated playroom. In this space, Ms. Shi collaborated with her children to create an artistic mural using washi tape, depicting a giraffe in a forest, which adds a spontaneous and playful element to the home's overall decor.
While the pre-existing renovation provided a strong foundation, Ms. Shi was keen to infuse the home with her family's unique personality and memories. She emphasizes the importance of displaying items that hold personal significance, such as her collection of vinyl records and antique finds, which are strategically placed throughout the home. The children's artwork, including a papier-mache creature in the living room and various drawings and photographs, is prominently displayed, often secured with washi tape, reflecting Ms. Shi's current artistic phase. She also encourages her children to create their own items if they express a desire for something, promoting creativity and self-sufficiency.
Ms. Shi, formerly a marketing and PR executive with a background in luxury brands, curated the home's aesthetic with a strong sense of style, leading to its resemblance to a trendy cafe. Her design choices include a deft handling of colors, evident in the mixed creamy pastel dining chairs, and attention to detail, such as selecting attractive towels for display. The balcony is adorned with colored lights and flowering plants like morning glory, creating a welcoming and festive atmosphere, often hosting family sleepovers on Fridays. The home also accommodates adult interests, with Mr. Seow's collection of limited edition bubblehead toys and an extensive DVD library displayed in the living room. Even the family's dwarf Yorkshire terrier enjoys free roam of the home, underscoring the inclusive and playful environment created for every member of the household.
