Judy Dunne’s desert-sunset-inspired selection of fuzzy plaids, metallic tiles and iridescent stone
Judy Dunne, a New York designer and founder of Butter and Eggs, presents her current mood board, which draws inspiration from her extensive international travels to places like Paris, Egypt, Italy, and Mexico. Her design philosophy is rooted in curiosity, leading her to explore and learn from diverse cultures and their aesthetic traditions. The resulting mood board reflects a fusion of colors and materials observed in these locations, encompassing centuries-old metalwork and pottery practices, striking desert sunsets, and rich textiles. Dunne describes her final design as "peaceful and warm," achieved through the integration of organic elements, vibrant earth tones, and luxurious natural finishes. She emphasizes that the flat lay design is a tribute to the colors and textures found in nature, highlighting those "magical moments where we slow down and see something special." The selection features a variety of materials and products, each chosen for its unique contribution to the overall aesthetic. These include the vibrant and cozy Nestor fabric in Plaine by Pierre Frey, which evokes a winter sky at dusk, and the luxurious, tailored Rune fabric in Howlite by Holland & Sherry, noted for its playful yet sophisticated pattern. Another textile, the FE Karoo Cent-Trois fabric by Toyine Sellers, is highlighted for its rich color, texture, and durability, with a specific application mentioned for upholstering a wall in a client's room. For flooring, a custom Ombre rug by Art + Loom, made of 100 percent wool, is detailed as both durable and soft, designed as a stair runner to create visual consistency and drama while strategically using darker tones to minimize the appearance of wear. Decorative elements include a vintage brass flower ashtray from The 1818 Collective, valued for the unique character it brings to a space. Wallcoverings feature prominently with the Enlightenment wallcovering in Rosy Meditation by Phillip Jeffries, chosen for its painterly quality, texture, and shimmering effect in a vestibule, and the whimsical Pollensa Spring wallpaper by Coordonné, suggested for powder rooms or closet interiors. The mood board also incorporates distinctive finishes such as a copper and resin panel with a black oxidized patina by Wüd, admired for its depth and dimension, ideal for a showstopping bar backsplash. A bronze and resin panel with a dusted medium patina from Wüd is also noted for its subtle visual texture and suitability for custom credenzas. Stone and tile selections include Blue Grigio Onyx from NY Stone, envisioned as an impressive fireplace surround, and a Labradorite stone finish sample, appreciated for its grounding energy, iridescence, and healing properties. The Labradorite is specifically linked to a "Turtle table" by Young Projects at Verso. A Molten Bronze Field Tile by Michael Aram at Artistic Tile is chosen for its "wow factor" as a kitchen backsplash or accent wall. Hardware is represented by a custom fluted antique brass pull by E.R. Butler & Co., described as adding rhythm and serving as jewelry for cabinetry. A unique ceramic piece, the 696 Vase by Karen Gayle Tinney, showcases the artisan's surprising juxtaposition of textiles and ceramics. Finally, cowhide color samples by Kyle Bunting are included for their rich colors and durability, particularly in homes with children and pets, with the studio's ability to customize designs being a key highlight. The Nuances fabric in Pampa by Pierre Frey is also noted for adding playfulness and color, with a recent application as a custom shower curtain. These selections collectively form a design narrative that is both globally inspired and deeply personal, emphasizing natural elements and unique craftsmanship.
