Christina Hall and James Bender Design Real Barbie Dream Closet
Christina Hall and James Bender, co-stars of HGTV's "Christina on the Coast," collaborated to create an innovative and playful closet for the finale of the "Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge." Their task was to design a closet that encapsulated Barbie's past, present, and future, allowing them extensive creative freedom compared to other teams who focused on a single decade. Hall expressed her enthusiasm for the project, noting that after remodeling numerous homes with similar design requests, this challenge provided a unique opportunity to "step outside the box and do something incredible." The design duo, known for their ability to blend elements from various eras, found the parameters perfectly suited to their style.
The resulting space prominently displays Barbie's historical outfits, echoing the showcase design seen in the 2023 Barbie Dreamhouse closet. A significant focal point is a life-size Barbie box, housing a special gown on loan from Mattel. This dress, which Hall had the opportunity to try on, is inspired by the Generations of Dreams 2009 Barbie doll, created to celebrate Barbie's fiftieth anniversary. Adding to the luxurious ambiance, a sitting area was furnished with vintage chairs sourced from a shop in Palm Springs.
The closet also incorporates two "toyetic features," defined by the show as toylike elements with dual purposes. These include an ATM for accessories and beverages, drawing inspiration from Cher Horowitz's iconic closet in "Clueless," and a rotating hat carousel. Despite the creativity and fun integrated into the design, the judges offered critical feedback regarding the closet's real-life functionality. Judge and interior designer Jonathan Adler pointed out the absence of mirrors, which are essential for selecting outfits. Fashion designer Christian Siriano also noted the lack of hanging space for Barbie's everyday attire.
Hall and Bender competed against Michel Smith Boyd and Anthony Elle Williams of "Luxe for Less," who designed Barbie's first-ever office space. While Hall and Bender's closet secured a win in its specific round, the overall competition was ultimately won by Brian and Mika Kleinschmidt of "100 Day Dream Home" for their party backyard design. This project underscored the blend of imaginative design and practical considerations inherent in creating spaces inspired by fictional worlds.
