4 Ways to Reimagine Old-School Bifold Closet Doors

Bifold closet doors often receive negative feedback due to their association with small, squeaky reach-in closets. However, designer Naïka Andre advocates for their potential, highlighting their practical advantages in small spaces where they don't obstruct pathways when open. Andre emphasizes the opportunity to transform these functional doors into aesthetically pleasing design elements, moving beyond conventional right angles to introduce curves and more interesting visual appeal. This approach allows for a blend of utility and style, making bifold doors a viable option for modern interior design. Andre's work with Nicole Taylor and Adrian Franks in Athens, Georgia, showcases innovative ways to reimagine bifold doors. One notable transformation involved the doors in the couple’s son Garvey’s bedroom. Inspired by Garvey's love for art, Andre and fabricator Gus Darnell of Oneta Woodworks lined the bifold doors with chalkboard panels. This design choice provides an interactive surface for drawing and doodling, while the minimal dust from a child's use ensures manageability. This practical and creative solution demonstrates how bifold doors can be personalized to suit specific needs and preferences within a home. For the primary bedroom's his-and-hers closet doors, Andre opted for a more sophisticated aesthetic. She painted the doors with Clare Paint's greenish-blue hue, creating a calm backdrop that allowed custom half-moon walnut-wood hardware, crafted by Darnell, to become a focal point. Andre explained that the handles were designed to mirror the segmented shape of the bifold doors, incorporating carved detailing at the top and bottom of each panel. This thoughtful design choice elevates the doors from mere functional elements to integrated pieces of bespoke furniture, adding a touch of elegance and cohesion to the room. Another innovative application of bifold doors was in the guest room of Taylor and Franks's home, where Andre incorporated tambour inserts. These fluted wood panels were painted in Benjamin Moore's Cape May Cobblestone, matching the existing door framing. This update was intended to create an inviting and intentional 'oasis' for guests, reflecting the homeowners' desire to extend a welcoming atmosphere to friends and family. The use of tambour inserts adds texture and visual interest, demonstrating how simple material changes can dramatically alter the perception of bifold doors. Beyond Andre's projects, Diana Yen's DIY renovation of bifold doors in her Ojai, California home provides further inspiration. Facing a closet without doors, Yen chose bifold doors as a cost-effective solution, transforming them for under $500 and within a weekend. Her inspiration came from an Instagram post featuring Italian doors with a distinctive squiggle outline. By adding decorative molding in a whimsical squiggle pattern, Yen infused elegance and a poetic touch into her bedroom closet doors, showcasing that even budget-friendly bifold doors from a hardware store can be customized to achieve a unique and stylish look. These examples collectively illustrate that bifold doors, despite their traditional reputation, offer significant potential for creative and personalized design transformations. #BifoldDoors #ClosetDesign #HomeRenovation #DIYProjects #InteriorDesign #CustomHardware #DecorativeMolding #SmallSpaceSolutions #BifoldDoors #ClosetDesign #HomeRenovation #DIYProjects #InteriorDesign #CustomHardware #DecorativeMolding #SmallSpaceSolutions
