Room We Love: A Dining Room-to-Home Office Conversion
This article details the transformation of a formal dining room into a functional and cheerful home office in a Woodbridge colonial. The homeowners, long-term clients of Clark & Clark Interiors, sought to repurpose the dining room to accommodate one homeowner's remote work needs. Over 15 years, the family's evolving requirements led to a series of remodels across their home, culminating in this specific office conversion.
The previous dining room featured sage green walls, chair rails with wainscoting, and traditional Queen Anne-style furniture. Designer Lynne Clark initiated the transformation by repainting the walls with Benjamin Moore's Simply White, aiming to brighten the space. A significant addition was a black floor-to-ceiling bookcase with beadboard paneling, which Clark painted a misty green to provide both aesthetic appeal and practical storage. The window treatment was updated with a bamboo Roman shade, complemented by four geode prints from Wendover Art used as framing elements.
The design's color palette was anchored by a hot pink Surya rug. Initially, the homeowner was hesitant about the vibrant rug, but Clark provided visual examples demonstrating how pink and orange tones could effectively blend within the space, ultimately gaining approval. Furnishings selected for the office included a white lacquer desk and a gold Lucy chest from Worlds Away. Accent chairs were sourced from Bungalow 5, and the desk chair from Crate & Barrel. Further artistic touches were incorporated through a pair of tulip prints from Trowbridge Gallery, positioned behind the desk. A Cabochon lamp with a turquoise base from Emporium Home introduced an additional subtle pop of color.
A primary challenge encountered during the project involved managing the homeowner's extensive collection of papers. Clark focused on designing effective storage solutions to organize folders, files, and various products, ensuring that items on display maintained a neat and curated appearance. The bookcase was arranged with a mix of books and framed family photos, creating a personalized yet uncluttered aesthetic. This conversion successfully addressed the client's need for a bright, cheerful, and highly functional workspace, demonstrating how interior design can adapt a home to changing lifestyle demands.
