Mumbai's hottest new boutique hotel is eclectic, spirited, and undeniably chic
The Kin, a 15-room design-forward boutique hotel in Mumbai, has opened its doors in a leafy lane in Dadar, offering a unique blend of eclectic design and heartfelt hospitality. Co-founded by siblings Imrun Singh Sethi and Guneet Singh, the hotel occupies a three-storey building that previously operated as a two-star establishment run by their grandfather. The siblings undertook a four-year renovation project to transform the space into its current iteration, aiming to preserve the grandfather’s ethos of running it like a home, but with a modern flair.
Upon entering, guests are greeted by a light-filled passage with a mild floral aroma. To the right, fresh, colorful blooms from the nearby Dadar flower market are arranged, while to the left, a concept store showcases an eclectic array of curios, including scented candles, coffee table books, vases, and tote bags. The store features skylights, mirrors on the ceiling, and marble flooring, leading guests to the reception desk, where the hotel's nuanced detailing begins to unfold.
Samir Raut, principal architect at Atelier Nowhere, skillfully executed the interiors, reflecting the siblings' design sensibilities. Many items within the hotel, including light fixtures, artworks, decor pieces, sKIN toiletries, and even some furniture, are available for purchase or pre-order, with the exception of bed linen, beds, and curtains. Guneet Singh personally curated and designed many of the products for both the store and the guest rooms, collaborating with ACKM Studio for technical detailing.
Each of the 15 rooms, spread across three floors, boasts a distinct design, layout, and size, ranging from 215 to 320 square feet, with an additional connecting family room spanning almost 550 square feet. This intentional variety aims to offer guests multiple unique "experiences of stay" in Mumbai. The flooring across the rooms combines hand-laid terrazzo in various hues with Indian marbles. While individual rooms vary in color scheme, orientation, and major interior details, cohesive elements such as circular and slanted windows, open wardrobes, retro-style analog phones, and custom KIN cushions and stationery create a unified aesthetic throughout the hotel.
Beyond the guest rooms, The Kin offers additional amenities designed to enhance the guest experience. A well-equipped gym is located on the terrace, providing fitness options with city views. The adjacent Terttulia restaurant, also managed by Sethi, offers both in-room dining and a seated dining experience, providing convenient and delicious meal options. These features, combined with the integrated concept store, demonstrate The Kin's ability to maximize substance and style within a compact footprint, presenting a chic and spirited boutique hotel experience in the bustling city of Mumbai.
