The design approach focuses on integrating the clients' bold preferences while maintaining the signature Studio McGee style. The entryway of the home establishes this unique aesthetic immediately. To counteract a potentially cold initial impression, large sections of drywall are covered with textural stone and raw timber, creating visual interest. A round table centrally located in the space promotes flow, complemented by additional seating along the room's edges. The art selections within the entryway serve as an initial introduction to the clients' distinctive and playful taste, highlighting the creative freedom given to the design team. The home features multiple bars, reflecting its design for hosting and entertaining. The first bar, situated near the entrance, showcases a color-blocked design using a velvety brown and a teal-tinged blue/black, seamlessly connecting to the main living area to facilitate social gatherings. One Sunday, he discovered the secluded home was for sale and scheduled an open house. This timing was serendipitous, as he and his wife, Marsha, had been contemplating building a new home. Upon visiting, they were immediately captivated by the property's design, which featured massive windows looking out onto a lush private garden and a dramatically designed pool. Within days, they made an offer on the house. The home’s appealing features—streamlined structural details, an open floor plan, ample space for art, and a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor living—are characteristic of the tropical modern architectural movement prevalent in Miami. The house, built a dozen years prior, reflected the original owner’s preference for this South Florida aesthetic. Consistent with tropical modern design, tall and wide windows and doors throughout the home offer expansive views of the landscape and water features. The homeowners, deeply appreciative of the home's Gilded Age heritage, approached the renovations with a desire to update for convenience without compromising historical integrity. This ongoing multi-phase project, spanning eight years, began with converting a three-season porch into a home office and included developing a two-level pool house and updating the main residence's facade, driveway, and entryway. The most recent phase focused on revamping the kitchen, butler’s pantry, and dining room. The design team, comprising Charlie & Co. Design for architectural input, Anderson Reda for custom building, and Twist Interior Design for interiors, tackled the challenge of redesigning a home originally structured to separate family and staff living spaces. Charlie Simmons, founding principal of Charlie & Co. Design, noted the presence of a large concrete bearing wall that effectively divided the house into two distinct zones: the front for staff with the kitchen and living quarters, and the back for the family's entertaining spaces with views of the Mississippi River valley. The primary task involved opening up the kitchen, which was previously isolated by numerous walls and doors. Leveraging original blueprints, the team realized significant structural modifications were possible within the confines of the main bearing wall. They adopted a traditional Georgian-style galley kitchen layout, featuring a large marble-topped island, a specific request from the homeowner for family gatherings and homework. The kitchen's design emphasizes formal symmetry, a hallmark of the Georgian style, achieved by centering a custom metal range hood between existing double-hung windows and reflecting this symmetry in the cabinetry, beam work, and lighting. Two smaller closets were combined to create a pantry, designed to store small appliances and cater to specific family requests, such as cereal dispensers. Widad expressed a desire for a home filled with energy and color, incorporating various styles that reflect their travels and African heritage. Before realizing this vision, several structural changes were necessary. The Edwardian house, despite its high ceilings and solid structure, required a layout redesign to enhance flow and maximize its potential. Additionally, period features such as fireplaces, ceiling mouldings, and skirting boards, which had been removed previously, needed to be reinstated. The unique construction of the semi-detached house, connected at the back to another property, meant the only garden was at the front and there were no windows at the rear. This resulted in abundant light at the front but a dark back portion of the house. Specifically, the kitchen, situated behind a reception room, only received light from a small side window, and the stairwell lacked natural light entirely. To address these challenges, Widad and Ara enlisted the help of Zulufish, a London-based interior design and architectural practice. Caroline Milns from Zulufish spearheaded the creation of a large, light-filled family space on one half of the ground floor.
