This Timeless Entryway Honors Its Historic Roots
Designer Arianne Bellizaire undertook a project for House Beautiful's Whole Home 2023, focusing on transforming a historic home's receiving room into a true entryway while honoring its original features. The design philosophy centered on retaining and enhancing existing architectural details rather than replacing them. Bellizaire was particularly inspired by the home's original wallcovering, which she aimed to integrate into a fresh, modern aesthetic. To achieve this, she selected two shades of blue paint, Hague Blue and Oval Room Blue by Farrow & Ball, to complement and anchor the damask pattern of the historic wallcovering. This choice simultaneously enhanced the traditional elements and introduced a contemporary feel, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.
The project extended beyond the entryway to include an update of the airy stair landing. Here, Bellizaire introduced a geometric wallpaper by Zoffany, drawing inspiration from historical designs but with a modern twist. This wallpaper guides visitors upstairs, suggesting a journey from the past into the present. A small sitting area was incorporated at the top of the stairs, designed as a contemplative space overlooking the untiled roofline. To manage natural light and obscure less desirable views, Hunter Douglas two-way automated shades were installed. Custom dividers from Architectural Grille's Frank Lloyd Wright collection were also used, offering flexibility to define spaces and indicate private areas to guests.
For the entryway itself, Bellizaire addressed the challenge of a single overhead light fixture and no windows by lining the ceiling with a reflective vinyl wallcovering by Phillip Jeffries. This innovative solution effectively bounced light around the space, making it feel brighter and more expansive. The furniture selection for the entryway prioritized both function and aesthetics. A nine-drawer dresser from Serena & Lily, typically found in bedrooms, was repurposed to store pillows and throws, demonstrating a creative approach to storage that matched the built-in bookcases. To prevent the area from feeling overcrowded, Bellizaire opted for two backless daybeds from Lee Industries, which maintained open sight lines and contributed to an uncluttered appearance. A built-in china cabinet was given a new life with a bird-motif wallpaper by Morris & Co., adding a touch of classic charm.
The stair landing's design continued the theme of honoring history while embracing modern elements. The handrail was preserved in its original stained wood, while the balusters were painted a deep blue, subtly linking the past with the present. The sitting area on the landing was envisioned as a comfortable spot for conversation and relaxation. The statement wallpaper by Zoffany served a dual purpose, not only adding visual interest but also clearly delineating public entertaining spaces from the more private areas of the house. Additionally, a pampered pooch pantry was created using a combination of reach-in and vertical storage solutions from California Closets, ensuring easy access to pet supplies. Throughout the project, Bellizaire aimed to create spaces that were both livable and elegantly tailored, reflecting a deep respect for the home's heritage while infusing it with contemporary functionality and style.
