How a Designer Turned a Wasted Room Into a Walk-In Pantry for $170
Toronto-based designer Gabriella Borg faced a common challenge after renovating her kitchen: a lack of pantry space. Following the removal of floor-to-ceiling cabinets to create a wider walkway, she identified an underutilized stairwell as a potential solution. Borg, along with her partner, transformed this overlooked nook into a functional walk-in pantry using a $170 IKEA shelving unit, the Kungsfors system.
The Kungsfors shelving system was chosen for its affordability and modular design, which allowed for customization. The couple enhanced the stainless steel frame by adding extra wood shelves and integrating a grated pot rack with produce baskets. This customization ensured that all items were easily accessible, optimizing the storage capacity of the newly created pantry.
The installation process was meticulously executed, recognizing the significant weight the shelves would bear. Borg emphasized the importance of precision, utilizing a leveling cross-line laser to ensure perfect alignment of vertical and horizontal brackets. They also double-checked for studs and employed deep anchors to securely mount the system, preventing any potential damage to the wall.
Strategic planning played a crucial role in the pantry's design. Borg measured her tallest cans to determine the optimal spacing and placement of shelves. This foresight addressed the common inconvenience of lifting heavy items from high shelves. Bulky items were placed on lower surfaces, while frequently used cans and labeled jars were positioned at eye level for easy access. Additionally, baking staples were decanted into clear containers, simplifying inventory management.
The pantry's design extended beyond shelving to include specialized tool storage. Adjacent to the stair landing, a grated rack was installed to organize pots, pans, and strainers. Borg selected two types of hooks: standard S-shaped hooks for a low profile and deeper hooks suitable for stacking. Four IKEA spice racks were also mounted, providing convenient access to spices from the adjacent step. The resulting organization, while not rigidly structured, was described as "organized chaos," reflecting a functional and personalized system.
