Mum transforms cupboard under the stairs into a handy pantry for £50
Kelly Sharp, a 34-year-old cleaner and mother of two from Slough, successfully converted the unused cupboard under her stairs into a functional pantry for a cost of just £50. This home improvement project was initiated due to a lack of storage in her new home's kitchen, a problem she encountered after moving in November with a limited budget, especially with two children aged six and fifteen and the impending Christmas season. The inspiration for this DIY endeavor came from browsing images on Pinterest and Google for pantry design ideas.
The transformation process took Kelly one week to complete, working during her non-working hours. The project involved purchasing four white chipboards from B&Q for approximately £40 to create shelves and several right-angle brackets priced at £1 each. Kelly also utilized leftover paint from her kitchen to ensure a cohesive look between the two spaces. Her method began with preparing the area by sanding down the staircase. Following this, she carefully cut the chipboards to the precise dimensions required for the shelves.
She then proceeded to paint the staircase white to achieve a fresh and airy aesthetic for the space. The walls of the newly designated pantry were painted with Dulux blush pink, adding a touch of color and warmth. After the painting was complete, Kelly installed the brackets securely onto the wall and attached the cut shelves, creating ample storage for various items. The total expenditure for all materials amounted to £50, demonstrating a cost-effective solution for increasing storage.
Kelly expressed significant satisfaction and pride in the final outcome of her project. The new pantry has not only resolved the storage issues in her kitchen but has also enhanced the overall functionality of her home. The improved organization allows family members to easily access items, contributing to a smoother daily routine. This DIY effort highlights an ingenious way to maximize underutilized spaces within a home, offering a practical and affordable solution for common storage challenges faced by many households.
